Chlamydia + Sterility
Posted: 10-23-07 00:43am

I'm 22 years old and I found out in august, after my first visit ever to the gyno, that I had chlamydia which I got from my boyfriend of two years, being that he is the only person I've slept with. I lost my virginty in july of 2006 and since then we have had unprotected sex. He's in the Navy and I know they get tested for all kinds of thing but he was never tested for chlamydia and he swears he didin't know he had it so I believe him. He said the last girl he slept with was right before he went into boot camp, alomost 3 years ago, and they didn't use a condom and she was a big drugy and he is almost positive he got it from her. So neither of us know how long we've had it for. But we both have been treated for it. How long can you have chlamydia before either one of us becomes sterile?

In women, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflamatory disease which can scar and block the fallopian tubes and prevent a fertilized egg from getting to the uterus. This can result in an ectopic pregnancy that would have to be removed.
In men, it can lead to sterility. The infection can travel to the testicles and cause a condition called epididymitis.
It's important to take the full course of antibiotics that are prescribed to you for this infection to ensure that it clears up. You don't always end up with fertility problems. Only your doctor could tell you for sure if you or your partner suffered any long term effects.
