Q: Weaning Off Bottles

finn started on whole milk 2 days ago and i cut out 2 of his bottles (he loves it and is doing great). we still give him a bottle at night before bed though and i'm wondering when that's supposed to stop.

i think he's getting too much to drink during the day, though if he wasn't thirsty he wouldn't keep drinking, right? he gets 18oz of milk and about 2 cups of water during the day. last night he woke up around 4:30am and was *soaked* up to his armpits.

does he need that last bottle or should he have his last cup of milk with his dinner (now he gets water) and nothing to drink after that?

Hey Bridget!

Personally I would be cutting out one of his bottles during the day and replacing that with water. I would keep him on his bottle before bed as this calms and relaxes alot of children down before bed and also reinforces that its sleeptime. Your right, if he wasnt thirsty he wouldnt drink it so its no big deal. He is 2 right?

he turns 1 in 2 weeks. i thought he was supposed to have 18-24 oz of milk a day, but i haven't talked to his doctor yet.

right now he gets a straw cup with milk at breakfast and lunch, a sippy during the day of water, sippy of water with dinner, and a bottle of milk before bed.

that's what i was thinking about the bedtime bottle, i feel like he needs it so he knows it's bedtime. *i* don't want to give it up because i feel like he's growing up too fast!

I know it's different for every baby, but my nephew Alex is 2 in January & he's only just stopped having a bedtime bottle. It became a comfort thing.. he would sit there in his pyjamas & watch tv snuggled up with my sister guzzling his bottle all sweet & innocent Laughing

If you think that Finn is getting enough fluids & he wouldn't mind not having that last bottle, then wean him off it. The sooner you get him off it the better, in terms of attachment.

Oh man I had the perfect chart about this. It laid out exactly how many bottles at each age that babies should getting but I can't seem to find it!!
I have another chart that has sample menus for each age and for 1 year old it says

6-8 oz milk with breakfast
2-4 oz juice (diluted) for a morning snack
6-8 oz milk with lunch
2-4 oz milk for a afternoon snack
6-8 oz milk for dinner

I don't know if that helps at all but there it is!

My kids love thier milk! Logan still has two bottles. 1 for his afternoon nap and one for bed and layla still has a beaker of milk for bed and she's 2 1/2. I wouldn't worry about it. Milk is good for them so let him drink what he needs to

If you're worried about the bottle and not the actual milk then could you see if he'll drnk it from a trainer cup instead?

i guess i'm mostly worried that he's drinking too much in the evening and he's going to leak through his diaper every night.

but then i'm worried if i take away his bedtime bottle, will he wake up hungry at like 4-5am?

i just don't know when people stop giving that bedtime bottle.

the schedule jennie posted (and i believe she's majoring in nutrition) makes it look like dinner should be his last beverage.

maybe i'll just play it by ear and try skipping it one night. it's kind of sad, he's growing up so fast and i feel like his bedtime bottle is one of the last things that keeps him a baby.

i still give Caty a bedtime bottle. She hardly ever wets the bed unless shes had a lot to drink the night before after dinner.

try limiting what he drinks between his dinner drink and his bedtime bottle. See if it helps. It could have just been a fluke and he may have just drank more than normal the night before.

If we limit the kids after dinner, and only a half a sippy of water or milk after 8, they dont seem to wet themselves.

This is what my doctor told me. She wants me to start Ava on whole milk at one year, not sooner. She said at 1 she should be getting 12-16 oz of milk a day. She was getting 28 oz of formula and she said that was way too much and wanted me to cut it down. I cut it down to about 20 and she's fine. I'll cut down more when we do milk. I start out with a sippy and if she doesn't want it anymore I pour the rest in a bottle. The day we start whole milk the bottles are being picked up except for night time. She's not attached, so I don't think it'll be hard for her. She will get her bottle at night for a couple more years at least. It helps her settle down.

I would def cut the water at dinner. Give him milk.

And when it comes to bed time, I'd say give him half a cup of milk.

We cut out the cup TOTALLY at 10 months. Even the night night bottle.

They have these:

Oni took those at first at night. It was a silicon cup tip and she LOVED it!!

Good luck! He's getting SOOO big!!
