Neck/jaw Pain [not Tmj]
Posted: 10-20-07 01:46am

Not sure exactly where to post this, but this seems like the best place as my local doctor originally thought my problem was TMJ. However an x-ray was done which disproved that. Havn't had anything else from them other than "wait and see", which isn't getting anywhere.

For about 3 months now I've been having problems with what seems to be mainly my neck muscles, but basically includes the whole facial area. From this, I have a constant headache that doesn't really ever go away.

My jaw constantly feels like it is not "set" right, sometimes applying pressure one way or the other helps, but not for very long. Often the muscles of my neck can be seen standing out, and I can't relax them. When I can, its only for the time I concentrate on keeping them that way, which usually doesn't last long.

For most of this time, my ears have also been rining, this has gotten particularly bad in the past week or so. Over the weekend I couldn't hear much at all out of my right ear, and the ongoing pressure in them was particually bad. The left ear does seem to be getting better - its mostly the right one recently. Also for the past week or so it has been painful to swallow, varying depending on how tense things are.

Overall, its getting worse. It used to be OK in the mornings and get much worse as the day goes on, but now it basically starts at full strength and then still gets much worse than it was before.

I don't know what to do next about this, so suggestions as to what specialists to see are welcome if not specific info as to what might be causing it. I just want to get something done about fixing it, or at least some relief.

Hi there, i'm cindy I know alot about this, this sounds JUST like me. An upperneck can actually create tmj like symptoms. What happens is the neck either shifts itself into the jaw and ears. Because they are all very close. The neck-the jaw-the ears. like with in 1/4 inch of each other, and one muscle attaches to the other. The Atlas is the first bone that holds on a persons head. It is only supported by ligaments and is in direct line with jaws and ears and it is holding up a 14 lbs head. My neck gives me ear pain, pressure in the right ear!!! popping air against the ear drum, i have all kinds of headaches, jaw symptoms, and trouble swallowing. my neck actually shifts my jaw, especially on the right. It feels just like a jaw problem. ok in my case i was helped Alot by a chiropracter. i love chiropracters, personally.... but others do well with a PT. but a chiropracter goes to school, alot longer than a pt. but it does sound like you have a neck problem.some like massage therapists. I hope that helps, but listen, sometimes they(docs) will tell you, you dont have tmj, and you might have a form of that also, like maybe muscular tmj, along with a bad neck. You might have a combo thing going on there. hope you feel better!!! cindy

hey an xray cannot dissprove that you have tmj---according to my xrays i dont have it either. you cant see tissues and muscles in the joint with an xray. You more than likly do have neck and jaw problems. a chiropractor would help and you may be able to eliminate neck and jaw problems with that. however you need to be prepared to take all means to fix it and dont set your heart on not ever failing. I learned taht the hard way. you will find something that works. pm me if you need any suggestions or if you have any questions.
