Right Breast Pain w/ Bloody Discharge from Nipple Posted: 10-19-07 20:45pm
I am having right breast pain from armpit
to nipple. I am 44 years old and had a
hysterectomy at age 39. It turned out I
had carcinoma in situ of the uterus. I
also have an aunt that has breast cancer
(my dad's side). I had a one time
spontaneous bloody discharge from the same
nipple and had it checked out - nothing
found. I still occasionally have a small
amount of bloody drainage. I was
wondering what the chances are of this
becoming breast cancer.

Did you start to practice mammogram after
forty?
Did you start to feel pain together with a
nipple bloody discharge?
Do you find your breast changed in size?
Can you feel some swollen lymph nodes in
your armpit?

It is hard to tell if there any lumps - I
have fibrocystic breast disease. The pain
has been going on for about 1 week. I went
for my yearly mammogram on 10/19/07. I am
awaiting results, however, the pain has
become worse after the mammo. No discharge
with pain.

Do you know that fibrocystic changes may
make breast examination and mammography
more difficult to interpret, early
cancerous lesions may occasionally be
overlooked?
Pain can be due to fibrocystic disease.
Are you experiencing itchy sensation on
your nipples?
Have you been suggested to reduce the
dietary fat and caffeine-intake to ease
you fibrocystic symptoms?
Do you constantly have bloody discharge
from the nipple?

I would get a second opinion from a breast
specialist if you have bloody nipple
discharge. Sometimes mammograms don't
detect what a sonogram will. and vise
versa.... a mammogram and sonogram of the
breast go hand and hand with breast
problems..... did they do a hemocult or a
nipple discharge smear and sent it to the
lab? If not... I would go back to the
doctor and make them refer you to a breast
specialist.

Many aggressive cancers happen quickly,
and could be confused as a rash. There is
a disease called pagets Disease (google
IT), please be aggresive and find out for
sure, early detection is the key altb ww

My doctor did get an occult blood on the
discharge - positive.
I also got a sonogram as well as a
mammogram - both negative.
The doctor thinks that the pain is related
to hormones - I am having very bad hot
flashes lately. I thank you for your input
and thoughts and concerns. I am still
worried even though I received negative on
the mammo and the sono.

Get a Second Opinion Posted: 10-31-07 12:56pm
If the occult blood was positive...you
need to get a second opinion.. the bloody
nipple discharge would not be coming from
hormonal changes. I would aggressivly
request other tests be done to find out
what is causing you to have bloody nipple
discharge..Not trying to upset you. There
are different reasons for that. Blood and
serosanguineous discharge(straw color)
carry the same signifucance. It could be
due to a hyperplastic epithelial lesion
which is usually benign or a duct
papilloma. One way to determine this is a
duct excision. You could also request
blood tests that is specific for the
breast.

As I already wrote to you fibrocystic
changes may make breast examination and
mammography more difficult to interpret
and early cancerous lesions may
occasionally be overlooked.
Please, ask for a second opinion and
breast biopsy!
Blood discharge from a nipple is worrying
sign.
