Q: How to test for HPV in males ? How to prevent ?

I have been with my boyfriend for about 6 months now. The whole time, we have been using condoms. The issue is that his ex had an abnormal pap that was positive for HPV, and he thinks he may be carrying it and doesn't want to give it to me. I heard that HPV is extremely common, and that most women will have it at some point and not even know. I also heard that there are nearly 30 strains of HPV, and only a couple of them cause cervical cancer. Is there any way to test for HPV in males? If I get the Gardisil shot, will I be protected, and can we start having sex without condoms? (I am on birth control). Additionally, I have had nothing but normal pap smears - I know that only indicates that I don't have precancerous cells - not that I don't have or have not been exposed to HPV. What should I do? I don't want to never be able to have sex with him without condoms, and I also don't want to endanger myself. What are my options?

There is no test for HPV in men.

Gardisil only prevents up to 4 types of HPV. It does not prevent all forms of HPV. But you should speak to your doctor if you want to try for this option. I don't know if this is something they'll do if you are over a certain age and have had more than one partner...

Ask your doctor about getting tested for HPV.
