Q: Hysterectomy Post-op Appt Today

Hello to everyone,
i had my tah on thursday, march 25th. Today at 3:15 pm I have an appointment to go and have my staples removed. (there are 17 of them.) I am hurting so bad that I dont want anyone to touch me! Lol anyway, I know it has to be done. It is so very black and blue, well, the incision and the area around it is black, really. I am taking 800 mg of ibuprofen every six hours. I am ashamed to say that I just used up the last of my percocet-the directions said two tabs every four hours, and that is just what I did. I am not trying to sound like a wimp here, but, what's it like having the staples taken out? Does it really sound worse than it is? Also, do you think I should be hurting as much as I am, four days post-op? And, one other thing-i thought about asking Dr. For more pain meds, as the ibuprofen isnt doing it. Any advice, anyone, on all of it? Thanks!

Hi rhonda,

hope you are doing better today.

I had my staples out 3 weeks ago. I didn't feel a thing! The motrin 800 is what my doctor wanted me to stay on until the swelling goes down. Could be for a week a two. Ask your doctor what is a normal dose to take in a days time.

The percocet I also took every four hours in the hospital, it sure helped!! I took it for a few days after surgery, and switched entirely over to the motrin. I'm still taking that every night because my back is sore. Probably from not stretching and working like i'm use to. Smile

i hope today you are feeling much better. Walking has been good for me and I don't feel as weak when i'm moving around. Take care of you.

Sincerely

Hi,
i had my staples removed about two days after the surgery in the hospital, and didnt hurt too bad, the nurse gave me two pain killers one hour before she took them out, I think it was darvocet, they take away the pain but they made me so sleepy, so when I got to go home the doc asked me if I wanted to stay on darvocet or motrin 800 mgs, three times a day, I choose motrin cause they dont make me sleepy and tired like the darvocet did. Only about two staples hurt, cause they were at a angle, but it wasnt too bad. I now have steristrips on and the doc said they will fall out on thier own. I think I had about 13 or fourteen staples. I had my surgery march 23rd and I had my uterus and cervix only removed and one fallopian tube. Good luck having the staples removed, other than that are you feeling okay??? I got scared today cause I had a little spotting happen, but the nurse said that is normal as long as it is not bright red bleeding. I wish my recovery would go by fast so I get with all my normal routines!!!
Take care,
pat from texas

Hi pat and becky!
Thanks for posting. Glad you are both doing well. I had the staples taken out, oh, did it hurt! Dr. Said I have a hematoma there, I guess that is where blood pools beneath the wound? And he ordered more pain killers, told me to stay off ibuprofen because it can make hematoma worse, and wants to see me thursday. He said he has never seen a person bruise like I did, and asked me if I had been tested for blood disorders. I don;t think I have any: my mother has always bruised easy, I mean, she will bump her leg and have an instant bruise. Maybe it is because we are both red headed and fair skinned? Anyway, Dr. Said that my abdomen was actually turning colors (bruising) as he was closing me up during the surgery! He said his assistant said, "whoa! Doctor, look at this!" anyway, today, they took staples out and put tape over it, vertically over the incision. I am up this late, it is 2:20 a.M. Here in kansas-i am posting because I tried to go to bed, and I just couldnt get comfortable, so I went to move to a new position, and I felt the worst pain, a burn, so bad it brought tears to my eyes. And I looked at the front of my panties, and on the right side, there was a big circle of dark red blood, really dark, and I looked at the incision site, it is bleeding, dark dark red and thick. It reallly hurts! I dont know what it is, do you think I reopened the cut, or maybe it is the hematoma? I am going to keep an eye on it-i would write more, but I dont think I should be sitting in front of the computer. If this bleeds any heavier, I am going to call the er. I will let you know what happens. Thank you both for taking time to talk with me!

Hi rhonda,
owwwww, that sounds so painful, I guess I am lucky cause mine didnt hurt too bad. But about that bleeding it doesnt sound right, maybe you should just go to the e.R, yeah I have to also sleep with a bunch of pillows and I almost sleep upright all night long, can we lay on our stomachs??? I havent tried it I am too scared, well I hope everything is okay for you, I have been having little tiny pains here and there, deep inside that I almost want to cry, I took some pills and I am feeling a little better, but I am also having painful, painful bowel movements!!! I wonder if that is normal!!!! Well good luck and let us know how you are doing!!!

Take care,
pat

Hi guys!
Sorry I havent been on line for a while. I ended up going to the dr wednesday, at home I started bleeding alot, I mean it was just running down my legs even. Turned out, it was that huge blood clot making its way out. Dr cleaned out the wound with peroxide, and packed it, so wednesday night and thursday morning were miserable. I went back yesterday (thursday) and had the dressing changed. Hurt like the dickens, I cried the entire time. I go back this morning, and Dr. Said at some point, he will numb that area up and close it. I assume he means stitches. They also switched my pain meds, I had went back on ibuprofen, but it just wasnt enough and percocet made me so sick every time I took it. So they changed it to darvocet, which to me is not any different than taking regular tylenol. I guess everyone is different. I guess I will talk to them about that today as well. Oh, and dr said there will be a home health care nurse to come to our house this weekend, to change the dressings and stuff.

Pat-you asked about laying on our stomachs? Don't do it! I ended up somehow on my belly last night, and went to turn over, and I was screaming, from pain. Dr said, oh, dont lay on your stomach! So, I miss being able to sleep on my stomach, but the pain is not worth it. Well, I hope everyone is doing well-i need to get ready so my inlaws can pick me up at 10 for todays appt. They really have been wonderful, hauling my butt around! Laughing

Glad You Are Okay
Hi,
oh sorry about all you are going through. It must be so tough just going back and forth to the docs, and then you have to get stitched up again. Its been 10 days already for me, I was in pain on tuesday and since then I have done nothing but lay in bed!! I dont want to end up back in the hospital so I have been popping my motrin and staying in bed. My house looks like the pitts but I guess I can clean it when I able to. I dont have help all the time and my sister drives me to the store or wherever I need to go, but it sucks not being able to do stuff for myself. I hope you are feeling good, and thats good that a nurse will be going to check on you, be careful!!
Take care,
pat

Hi all,
i am two weeks post-op today. I am having home health care come out and change the bandages on the incision. I had a Dr. Appt yesterday, he told me that he was not comfortable closing the wound yet. He started me on levaquin, antibiotic, as he felt it might be starting to hint at infection. Anyway, the home nurse was here today, and will be fri, sat and sun,. I have a Dr. Appt monday, and he will decide what to do then. Dr. Also said I may be able to use a "vacuum pump" on my incision, instead of having to have it stapled again. Well, going to lay down awhile. Hope everyone is doing well.

Ps-one other thing. My seventeen year old daughter, who has kind of been grumbling about having to do most of the housework for me, asked the home nurse if she could look at the incsision. I thought she was going to pass out. She said, mom, I never thought it would be this bad. I thought you were just acting like it hurt that bad. I hate to say it, but I am actually glad she had a look at it. Now she knows I ain't faking it! Surprised

Hi
Hi rhonda,
it sounds like you are doing much better.
What exactly does the vacuum pump do? Its been two weeks for me too, my incision is doing better, doc says he wants me to clean it everyday with perxoide and keep a gauge on it to keep it dry, since my tummy hangs a tiny bit it covers the middle part of my incision and thats the part that its taking longer to heal cause it always moist. But other than that I want to do all my housework and go back to work but doc says I still have to wait and just take it easy until my next check up in two weeks. Well I am glad that your daughter saw your incision, I did the same with my daughter, only she said it didnt look too bad. Hahah.
Take care,
pat

Extremely eHealthy
Hysterectomy
It sounds to me like you had vaginal hysterectomy's, I had an abdominal one and I had them take it all out due to cancer I was a little leary of some of the cells hiding and they would have to go back in, I have had a lot of surgeries but the hysterectomy was the best surgery I ever had. I was out of it the first couple of days after surgery but no problem since then except a little scar tissue.

A suction vaccuum suction is a little machine they put on you to take out the infection and it helps to close you up. After my first neck fusion they had taken out a piece of my hip called a bone plug to put in my neck I ended up getting a staff infection and had home health, it was a mess for a while.

Try not to do too much after your hysterectomy or you will end up getting adhesions and they are no fun! And I realize it is easier said then done!

If you have any problems after your hysterectomy don't mess around with, it call your Dr. Or get to e.R. That is nothing to mess around with! I was on vicadin after my hysterectomy and I would only take 1/2 @ a time but remember anytime you take pain meds eat a little something with them, even if it is a couple of crackers and yes, pain meds will constipate(sp) you!

Hope you are all better soon!

Sincerely,
sandy

Hi
Hi,
i had a ab/surgery, bikini incision, that vacuum pump sounds painful. Today is a nice day, but my husband wont let me do a darn thing at all. But I realize that I dont want to get hurt, my incision is healing but today I went walking just to my mail box, which isnt too far and I felt strange, it felt as if when I walk my incision is streching or something. So I came back home and went to lay down, I cant wait until I feel 100 percent better!!!
Take care,
pat

Hey-
mine was abdominal too, the "bikini" cut, doctor measured it, he did tell my husband he had to cut me more than he thought he would. Well, I learned how to care for my wound. It is doing better. I go back to the doctor on monday. I drove my daughter to her friends house today, about 8 miles from our house, and 8 mi back. I was shocked just how much that wore me out!!! I have been grumbling about not being able to do anything. I told my husband I wanted to go back to work. Besides, we need the money (who doesn't, I know!) he said forget it, and that doctor wouldnt release me this soon anyway. Pat, I hope you keep feeling better each day!

Sandy-nice to hear from you. If you dont mind me asking, but, what are adhesions? It doesnt sound like anything good!

Take care all til next time-

rhonda Wink

Hi
Hello,
well I guess that little walk to my mail box was a little too much!! I got back home and my incision was hurting a bit,so I went and checked on it and it was bleeding, I got so scared that I cleaned it with peroxide, put some neosporin on it and then stayed in bed the rest of the afternoon, I dont want to have to go back into the hospital!!! No wonder when I was walking it felt like it was streching it out! So I figure I better listen to the doc and still keep taking it easy, even if I feel good, its better to be safe than sorry. I still havent driven yet, so I think I wont until I go back to the doc again on the 21st of this month!!! So take it easy too girls!! We may feel good but we are still healing inside too!!!
Take care and have a great easter!!
Later,
pat
