I'm looking for help.
I recently (3 weeks ago) had a minor
surgery to remove cysts from my scrotum at
a Military Treatment Facility.
I have had several complications:
1. Ruptured sutures (twice).
2. Swollen inguinal lymph nodes that
abscessed and burst.
3. A laundry list of bacterial infections.
4. A new cyst that came up over night and
abscessed.
I received a copy of my lab report on
Friday and was shocked to see that I had
three types of bacterial infections, the
worst being Acinetobacter Baumannii. I
have been referred to Infectious Disease
for further treatment.
My concern is this:
The doctors that presented me with the lab
report downplayed the situation and
actually joked about it. One asked if I
had deployed, the other said, "you
probably got that here". I have not
deployed since 2000.
Everything I have read about Acinetobacter
Baumannii scares the hell out of me. It's
not just the infection that I'm concerned
about; I have not exactly received great
care from MTFs. I'm afraid they're not
going to fully help me. Thankfully, I just
finished a regiment of Augmentin. I
received antibiotics only after my lymph
node burst. Everything I've read so far
tells me that A. Baumannii is NOT
susceptible to Augmentin, am I wrong?
Side note: 4 months ago I had a cyst in
the same area biopsied at dermatology at
the same MTF. I had been bounced back and
forth between Dermatology and Urology at
least 4 times up to this point (I had been
complaining about pain and swelling for 4
months). 1 week after the biopsy was done
I had the cyst removed in an emergency
procedure at Urology. I was told that I
was about to become septic. I had a bad
staph infection and the doctor said I
probably got it at the derm clinic when
the biopsy was done.
Has anyone else had any experience with
Acinetobacter Baumannii?
Should I contact a non-military facility?
Thanks for reading,
S

This sounds like a terrible experience. I
don't know much about it, but I wiki'd it
(not reliable mind you) and it did say
that it was resistant and has made first
appearances in military hospitals, and
something about Iraqi soil?? But either
way, I would call a different hospital and
ask if you need to be seen. It looked like
it was treatable.
