I have read a few of the posts regarding
pain after fillings. I have a slightly
different issue and wonder if anyone could
comment or share experience with me here.
I had a temporary filling in my back left
tooth (no idea on the correct name!) put
in about 7 months ago, no pain whatsoever
with clear filling and it fell out last
week. Still no pain at all but I figured I
better get it replaced. I saw a new
dentist as I have relocated and he
replaced it and said he put in a "pin" to
hold the tooth up and that it should last
6-9 months although it would be preferable
to have a crown within 2 months. Again,
clear filling.
I am now five days later and still in
pain. Manageable with pain killers but
uncomfortable nonetheless. I went back
yesterday and was told I need a root
canal. This was without further
observation or any further checks. He said
it may settle down and I got prescribed
anti-biotics and painkillers and told to
wait a few days. Initially he wanted to go
right ahead then and there with the root
canal and after having some reservations
to sitting through another two
appointments and more pain/money he then
prescribed the meds and said to wait a few
more days. After all of this I will still
need a crown on this tooth.
Now, with this temporary filling in, which
should last about 6-9 months, is it normal
to experience pain five days later? A
constant dull, throbbing ache. Is root
canal the only alternative? Should I see
another dentist?
Thanks for any comments.

If it were me, I would find another
dentist and get another opinion. I don't
understand where this pain is coming from.
It hard to believe this other denitst just
suggested the root canal and did not
mention this from the start. If he did not
observe or check your tooth, how did he
know you needed antibiotics? I understand
the pain killers, I've had my share of
pain and dentist...but a root canal is
expensive. I had no problem with any of
mine nor pain afterwards. I would seek
another dentist and let him access the
situation, then if you really need a root
canal to save the tooth, you have that
option.
