I have had severe anxiety for about 6 years now. I'm 19 years old and i'm getting worse everyday.

Within the past two years I've been having throat issues, where it feels as if there is a lump in my throat, also sometimes when I'm eating, when i swallow.. the food goes to the back of my throat and sits there, It doesnt go down it takes me 2 or 3 swallows to get it to go down and a sence of panic comes over me and I can't finish eating. It's almost as if my brain forgot how to swallow.

Also, I belch A LOT. Expecially after eating. I don't know why or if it's related to the anxiety... (maybe i'm nervously / without knowing taking in to much air when I eat because I'm to consentrated on my swallowing )

I have an appointment with the Gastro. doctor, if he can't find anything wrong I guess I can feel better that it's only anxiety... it's just scary because I feel like one day I'm gonna start choking.. and my swallow reflex just won't work.

I stopped taking my medication about a year ago, and I just noticed i've been getting worse... I was on xanax.. any thoughts / comments/ advice to the get rid of these symtoms / is appreciated. Smile

Extremely eHealthy
Never!
Whoa! Did you stop the Xanax on your own? And if so, did you go "cold turkey" or shy off them. Never, stop a narcotic without first consulting your doctor ( which I'm hoping you did) and never a drug like Xanax or Prozac etc.... We are talking major withdrawl. How long were you on your Xanax? I was on it for 4 years and just now switched over to Klonopin. But, close enough to the same dose that I was on with the Xanax. Just for a different reason due to the Klonopin has another componient in it that helps MS.
As far as your swallowing goes. I am very happy you are going to see a gastro. I am sure you will get the help you need there. Could be as simple as the way you are swollowing and the way you are chewing your food before you swollow it.
I actually had to learn how to eat again after being on the ventalator last Dec. I would inhale just about everything I tried to swollow. Not good. So, chin down and drink through a straw if you have to. I have acid reflux and this might not be uncommon. Just follow whatever the gastro tells you and you will do just fine.

I wish you the best,
Carrie
