Your Beliefs On God: No Women Allowed Hah =) Jp Posted: 10-14-07 13:17pm
So, I figured we could take a step back
and out of the penis related questions for
a bit and talk about our personal
conceptions on theology, the existence of
a God, and the sort. However, I understand
there are those who are very serious about
their religions, productive debate is fine
but if you aren't mature enough to express
your beliefs without putting down others,
your thoughts aren't needed. Just simple
discussion for the openminded and the
curious.
I personally am Agnostic, some Christians
I knew considered that to be the same
thing as Atheist as far as they were
concerned, but to be agnostic is to
believe that we with our current knowledge
have no way to prove the existence of a
God (does not mean he does or doesn't
exist), so an agnostic can either choose
to not believe until proven, or believe
until proven false. I just don't think we
being mortals despite our advancement in
human history, can really postulate the
existence of something so incredibly above
us. Like explaining to a man of the 14th
century what artificial intelligence is.
What is God anyway? Classical Theistic
Conception of God states that it is a
Being who is wholly perfect, omnipotent,
omniscient, and omni-benevolent.
For me personally, it really isn't about
God that I question the existence of, but
rather the religions that I am concerned
about. To make things short, I am more
anti-religion then I am anti-God. I just
refuse to believe in religion because they
have been altered so much by HUMANS
throughout the ages. It is not as if
however, that I have chose to be ignorant
and not hear/know what the religion is
about. Turns out I know quite a bit of
stories of Christianity (varying from the
different branches however), sometimes
more then the believers themselves. I know
a bit of Paganism, Daoism, Confusionism,
Buddhism, Hinduism, etc and even Levey
Satanism. Turns out Satanism isn't quite
like it was stereotyped to be.
But anyway, onward to God, for the moment
I can simply and readily accept that there
are beings who are at least "Godly"
compared to me or humans in general.
Suppose aliens do exist (which I think
there has to be considering that
scientists say there are more suns then
all the grains of sand in the world
[imagine the amount of planets even if it
were on average 2 per sun! since our sun
has 8, I think they trashed Pluto as a
planetoid], if any alien were to visit us
on earth one day, just consider the
difference in knowledge and technological
capabilities! The nearest sun from us I
think is over 4 light years away, imagine
what they are capable of to exceed such
things! To us they would certainly be
"Godly" because they probably have
technology to squash us like a bug.
Concerning the Classical Theistic
Conception of God however, I think it is
false, just a controversy. Perhaps there
could be an all perfect being, omniscient
and omnipotent, but I do not see why
people have to keep seeing it as a
omni-benevolent God. I think people are
just too hopeful and prefer the idea of a
being that is far greater then us that
cares for us then one who would eliminate
us like a fly.

OK, Miko, I like your theory. Now
mine...How to word this without sounding
trite? Yes, Jesus is the son of GOD. But
so am I. He was a profit and a saint. I am
no profit and I am definitely no saint.
But I to am the son of GOD. As are you. As
are we all. We are all GODS children. No
religion, no belief in GOD, no belief in
goodness for goodness sake is wrong. Its
all good. Its all real. There is good and
bad, fact and fiction and wrong and right
in all forms of religion and spiritual
belief. Its all wrong and yet its all
right. You have to dig deeper than any one
solitary religion can lead you. Truth is
to be found in the journey, not the
destination. There is no final
destination. We all go on. We live and
live again and then we live again and what
we put into each life directs us to the
next. Our karma directs our destiny. Good
for goodness sake leads you to GOD. John
Lennon is a saint to me. In the purist
since of the word. He was crucified, not
literally, and threatened for speaking his
truth. Harvey Milk is a saint to me. He
died from a bullet to the head...several,
because of love misunderstood. Anyone who
looses there life in a quest for equal
rights for all or peace on earth or
understanding of GOD or love for loves
sake or goodness for goodness sake is a
saint. Those who are well known and those
unknown. They move forward. They go on.
They live. As all saints do. Forever and
ever, amen....
Do not put your trust or your faith in
televangelists.
Never give them one penny. Do not bye into
the rants and ravings of money grubbing
religious zealots. If a man of GOD is
telling you how to worship and how to pray
and telling you who will and will not
enter the kingdom of Heaven then turn them
off. They are not men of God. They are
judgmental money worshipers spreading hate
and intolerance in the name of
righteousness and truth. Do not by into
it. Do not give them your time or your
money. I believe that always giving your
money to a church is lazy and foolish.
Some money should go to your church but
not to a television evangelist. If you
truly want to do Gods work then get busy.
Do not drop your money into a bucket and
blindly hand it over to men in suits. Go
to the store or superstore and bye socks,
shirts, underwear, food, tooth paste,
tooth brushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo,
food, food, food, blankets, pillows,
towels,...you get it? And take them to a
shelter. Be giving but be smart.
Evangelists and churches on TV have plenty
of money and cars and homes and jewels and
all the comforts of this world. Don't
reward them with more free money hoping
that they will pray for you. I will pray
for you for free...and so should they. No
tipping allowed! Take 2 or 3 hours and how
ever much you can afford to spend and
spend an afternoon giving to those who
really need it. Thats when you will feel
God. It feels so good. Don't be rigid.
Flex your mind. Stretch your soul. Bend
your way of thinking about religion and
God... he is everywhere...or she...or
something in between...thats my 2
cents...anyone else out there care 2
share? Peace and
Love,Steve

I'm obsessed with religion.
I study it, I read about it in my free
time, and I try my best to relate to those
who follow it. I've been to Orthodox
temples in Eastern Europe, huge Cathedrals
in Rome, Mammoth Anglican churches in the
UK and in Hindu and Jain temples and
Muslim mosques in India. I love them all.
Instead of trying to polarise all of them,
and decide what is right or wrong about
each of them, I embrace the truth I find
in everything. Believe it or not, I
believe that there is a breath of truth in
each religion. I believe in THAT truth.
Call it God, a higher force,
non-rationality (not to be confused with
irrationality), the great "energy"...
whatever you want... It's there. I believe
that, yes, humans have messed up and
interpreted and exploited the concept of
this higher truth to not only suit their
thirst for power, but they have also used
it as a means to validate their
'rightness' and, therefore, their ability
to judge the rest. THIS is the biggest
plight of humans.
I dont' try to convert people to how I
think and believe, I don't think than
anyone is necessarily wrong about their
devout religious views, because, in the
end, like the rest of us, they are
fulfilling their quest for finding what is
true and real. I critique it, but I don't
judge based on it. Many people, in
general, I feel, have fallen to quests for
power, influence and supremacy. It's so
important to try to break from that and
seek truth with deep, personal seeking.
My current efforts are being focused on
Atheism. I've been reading lots of Richard
Dawkins... Atheism is a hard nut to crack.
In the end, I'm a firm believer that
putting strong effort into seeking truth,
is, in fact, a mimicking of truth itself:
continually educating yourself based on
your deep, inner assertions.

how are his books? I want to read them but
I don't feel like I'll get much out of it
since I am pretty godless.

They're arrogant, pompous, and, if you
believe in anything supernatural, you may
be a bit insulted even. But if you take it
with a grain of salt, he's informative and
comical.

Dawkins is often depicted as an arrogant
man but I believe his argument is in
earnest. As an evolutionary biologist, his
concern shouldn't be whether he's
offending believers or not, his concern is
to be as pragmatic as he honestly can be.
Indoctrinated religion can be extremely
harmful as we've all seen throughout
history. It is probably best left a
totally private, individual matter.
Personally I'm an atheist, not an
agnostic. Agnosticism seems to be a
submission to pre-set principles in
society. To someone who considers
themselves a strong agnostic, borderline
atheist, they should have the impartiality
to ignore past belief systems and form
their own opinions from scratch.
Truth is, no-one will ever prove or
disprove the existence of the
metaphysical, therefore it is something
that should probably be ignored
completely. It does make for heated
debates but the more I argue with
religious types the more they twist their
arguments to the point where they become
unintelligible.
