I dont understand? if depression is a chemical reaction in my brain how will talking to someone help me? I know thats what the pills are for but still, they say that they will not make it better so why take them? And if depression is so normal, why dont any of the people i know have it, more importantly why do they treat me so different. not nicer, they just ignore me. I just dont understand, and I really want to. Can someone help me?

Almost everything we do creates a chemical reaction in the brain, even having a meaningful conversation. If i work out, theres a reaction. When I laugh, theres a reaction etc. Depression can be a brains inability to regulate chemicals or just a reaction to a life that needs to be analyzed further. I didnt spend all this money on therapy for nothing, if it didnt work we wouldn't recommend it. You gotta trust us.

Some people take pills because their brain cant regulate things normally, or they are so depressed they need a little boost to even face the day. Its not a solution for everybody and is not always a long term treatment. We dont know why you feel bad. A doctor will help determine what is best for you. If pills will help, they will advise you to take them.

The brain is amazing. Its proven that talking can help. I could write a million pages on why. Dont believe me, look up papers on the internet with reputable sources and make your own conclusions.

Edit - not everyone experiences it at the same time and young people are often very unsympathetic. Im sure a decent amount of the population experiences some from of depression in their life but Im too lazy to cite a source. There are many times it can start, and many reasons.

Re: I Dont Understand
I agree with the person above me- medication isn't a long-term solution.

Depression is common but most people don't talk about it. Before I was diagnosed I had no idea how many friends and family members had it too. People didn't talk about depression a few decades ago because no one really understood it, and there was stigma attached. People don't talk about it now because some of that stigma is still there.
I find people treat me different because they're afraid of upsetting me, or they find it awkward talking to me now so they just don't say anything.

The most important thing is to not let depression define you.
Allow it to be a part of your daily existence... by means of dealing with it, and confronting it, and fixing it, but never EVER let it define what and who you are.

A lot more people have depression than you'd think. There is still such a stigma attached to it, and I think this is why people might treat you differently. They don't know how to react to it.

I often say that I find it easier to tell people I'm gay, than to tell them I have depression. The two stigmas are so different.

Chemical imbalances can be balanced, and, as it so happened with me, talking with people about it made it more manageable. Someone above said that everything we do creates a chemical reaction... many of these reactions can help you. You just have to find what they are. That's how I dealt with my depression anyways.

I hope this helps. If you want to talk, feel free to PM me! =)

First, you are not alone. We all have to find a way to cope and Im glad you came here.

What Im about to say doesnt fix how you are feeling. It wont make everything better. It doesnt make how you are feeling wrong. But rather than offer nothing, maybe this will help.

Medication and doctors are like a restaurant. You dont always like what you get the first time, but if you give it a shot and keep going back, you are more likely to find that gem on the menu. Its not a one stop shop for nourishment, its an array of choices to meet any kind of need. Its up to you to find the combination that is perfect for you.

To aid you in these choices, make sure you are seeing a psychiatrist to get your medication. Family doctors are great, but I prefer someone well schooled in pharma. You should be seeing someone weekly so there is some way to gauge how the meds are working and to adjust your prescription. My uneducated opinion is that meds should never be taken without the strict monitoring of a doctor seen at least every other week. Your doctor should have told you that these meds can take a long time to work. Just make sure you dont change your dose or stop taking it, that will make things worse.

Also, it can take up to six months to really feel the effects of an SSRI if thats what you are taking. Dont give up just because what you ordered this week doesnt suit you, give it a few more tries just to be sure.

In closing, thanks for stopping by, keep your chin up, make sure you have a psychiatrist or counselor that you like and wait at least a few more months until you give up on these med.

Let me know if I can offer any other personal experiences. Thanks again for posting.

(Im a student, not a doctor, I know nothing about medication or therapy other than personal experience)
