This is a ridiculous debate, choosing to legalize all drugs.

Why dont we just go and promote death, suicide, depression, addiciton, rehab drop outs, homicide, rape, battery, and robbery while were at it!

Actually i don't think suicide, addiction, or dropping out should be illegl either. I have a hard time telling people what they can and cannot do within the confines of their own body.

Don't be so quick to call a debate ridiculous. There are other countires which do not criminalize drugs, and amazingly many of them do not have the same problems that we do in this country. I would not legalize homicide or robbery because they directly affect others. Doing drugs does not automatically mean people will go out and commit crime.

However, this is simply a philosophical debate, and I seriously doubt that the US could handle legalization of all drugs, period.

I think American society has a big problem with moderation in in general as it relates to just about anything.

Do you have any reasoning for this opinion?

Depression and addiction are illnesses; diseases. Would you use "cancer" the same way you used rape? Confused

Then you have to look at the rate of alcoholism.. Would be it be so high if that drug had not been made legal? Maybe they thought by making it legal not so many would want it. No. I don’t think drugs should be made legal. I think to many people would kill themselves. No self control.

Would you start using drugs if they were legalized?

Remember what happened when alcohol was illegal? That didn't work.

I wouldn't start using drugs if they were legalized. I still have some strange notion that some people would, though.

I don't really have a view on this yet, I guess. We'll see how it goes.

Legalizing is not equal to promoting.

But I agree that America has an issue with moderation. In most countries they don't consider abstinence the only way to deal with addiction- that's a strictly american thing. They believe, in most countries, that addiction can be treated with a healthy attitude toward alcohol in moderation.

My boyfriend says that "the only good to come out of drugs being legalized is that the jail/arrest rates would go down and the whole outlook that if something is readily available, people won't do it nearly as much as they do." Exact quote.

with the amount of people who do drugs now,
i could see drugs being legalized.
Not all of them, but drugs possibly like:
Marijuana,
Mushrooms,
Opium
Acid
the drugs that open your mind, relax the soul, mellow you out.
The other drugs, crack cocaine, PCP meth Ketamine, MDMT MDMA, Ecstacy, those drugs, the extreme drugs that really give you that fix that you need everyday, those should stay off the streets.

I don't think there's anything wrong with girls having sex, using birth control, and being educated about protecting themselves against std's. At an age where they seem mature enough to handle it (a different age for every girl)

Smile to get off the subject....

Heh I had this topic on my own forum before. I'll just summarize.
If drugs were legalized
Pros:
- Black market, gang activity, criminal activity would go down significantly
- Drug dealing would be wiped off because it only sells at high value since its illegal and "rare", if it were legal on stores and such, drug dealers could not compete.
- Would then promote safer healthier environments/lifestyles in terms of dangerous neighborhoods since gangs would be weakened.
- Government would save tons of money, no need to spend millions/billions trying to watch the borders, illegal drug runs, breaking and entering suspects, etc.
- Government would make tons of money, by adding a small tax on all drugs and economy would rise with this new market product. Our government needs money -_-, they spend it on many stupid things.

Cons:
- Significantly larger increase in substance abuse, addiction cases, DWI/DUI cases.
- People would be "stupider and unhealthier", I put this in quotations because some people argue that certain drugs don't do such things so I will leave that to the experts.
- Society could crumble if the above statement is true if enough people decide to do drugs after legalized.

Some thoughts:
- Basically if drugs were legalized, it would mean that it would be good for the government as a whole, which could then be argued is good for the people within the government, however, it would also destroy the quality of living within the individual.
- Either cases, legalizing or not legalizing, has its good and bads, its just a matter of who its good and bad for.
- A plausible moderation if drugs were to be legalized is a much larger effective push towards educating the young (and old) to the side effects drugs. Taking a mandatory health class 1, 2 times in life spending a part of the semester on why drugs is bad simply like we do now isn't good enough for this scenario.

we had a debate in my philosophy class on if marijuana were legal
and most people said it would be a real good investment for the govrnment and advertisement on tv.

another good thing about it would be the people who need medical marijuana wouldnt be so looked down upon. some case studies on tv about people with medical marijuana get mean looks from people, even though their taking their medication.
