Q: Mirena Iud, Good Or Bad?

I was wondering if anyone has ever had the IUD(Intra uterine device) mirena. Im supposed to go to the doctor tomorrow to choose a form of birth control and I was intrested in this one. I read the medical pamphlet and the mirena websites and its seemed like a good idea, but over the last couple of days I've researched a couple of forums and the experiences I've read were pretty alarming and scary Shocked There was more bad than good said about it. I know womens body's react diffrently to the hormones, and I also just turned 20 and most of these posts were from women 30-40 years of age so age may have been a factor. If anyone has any information or has had mirena I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

Kymmie.

i have had a very good experience with mine. i had mine fitted at 22 and i am getting it removed this week to ttc otherwise i would not remove it at all. i have had no periods which i think is great. i know a few girls that have had mixed opinions on it. my advise would be to go for it. you never know how you may react to ANY form of birth control. for me it is the best and i will go back on it once my baby is born.

I loved mine and only had it removed to TTc too!

I also had bad experiences with many other types of birth control (depo/implanon) and had no problems with my mirena at all. I will definately be having another one fitted next year Smile

So....what About Implanon?
Aww man... I wish I was till up when you guys posted this, it probably would have rooted me in a decision :-/. I went to the doctor today and I was still undecided so I decided not to get it *tear* but my doctor suggested implanon and it seemed like a good idea...untill I read the pamphlet, the part about not knowing when you will get your period makes me kinda iffy on it. I mean, whats the point of having birth control if you cant have sex right?

Me and my partner love our sex...and I'm really paranoid about not having things in order when it comes to my body, so having an unpredictable period and being paranoid about being preggers all the time is something im not looking forward to. Also the Implanon pamphlet said its studies werent sure if it worked with overweight patients, and im overweight seeing as i just gave birth 6weeks ago. My medical insurance expires at the end of this month so im running out of time and theres so many options. I know all birthcontrol has its goods and bads and it really depends on the person. I dont think i'll get it due to the irregularity of periods but it doesnt hurt to have some more opinions on it.

Anybody?

Why would not knowing when your period was coming affect your sex life? If you're on Implanon, you are not ovulating, EVER! So it doesn't matter when your period comes. Just like on Depo. You can't predict periods then, either.

Get it!!! I wanted one soooo badly but the clinic I went to didn't have them Sad

The pamphlet said expect to have irregular bleeding during the use of implanon and that bleeding will vary from heavy, light or no periods

In a couple of forums ive read some women had bleeding constantly for 4 months, others had 1 week during the month where they werent bleeding (spotting included),some only had periods every two months and some had no periods at all.
The random pattern is what gets me. If I were to be one of the women that bled for 4 months that would affect my sex life( I cant have sex if im bleeding, I mean, I know I COULD but i just wouldnt.), but at the same time i could be one of the women who dont bleed at all. I know i can never be sure of what will happen untill i get it because everyone is diffrent and reacts diffrently... I guess i'll just have to take the risk, and i could always get it taken out if i dont like it Confused

I'm on Implanon! It's the best! I do get my periods (although irregular), but you can feel when you get iyour monthlies. Mine is approx. every 5 to 6 weeks and lasts for about 4 days. I have skipped a month or 2. I had mine in for a year now, stayed the same weight, not suffered any other symptoms. The only downfall is the libido taking a dive a bit. The way I see it, hey if you don't have to worry about falling pregnant, great! It beats having to remember taking the pill, or going every 2 weeks for an injection. Can't talk about the other options, because I haven't tried them.

Injections for depo are every 3 months Razz You change the ring every 3 weeks. Patches are changed every week.

I don't know of anything on a 2-week cycle.

I got my Mirena about a year ago after having my first child.
I am one of those women who bled for 7 months straight. It didn't affect my sex life at all. I wasn't going to wait it out because it had already been 6 over 6 weeks since we had sex.
Now that the bleeding has stopped, I love Mirena. It just took a while for my body to adjust.
They have to insert it while you are on your period, which is a little uncomfortable.
I don't have periods at all anymore, just a little spot every month, just at one time of day.
I would recommend that you try Mirena. If you are on Medicaid, it pays for it, otherwise (my doctor told me) Mirena costs about $600-700. It lasts for 5 years, which is great too. And, if you don't like it, you can always have it removed. But I think if you try it, you will like it better than Implanon.

Many women love mirena if you haven't yet made a decision- the ring is also great. Make sure if you are breastfeeding that you check with your doc about it.

Mirena wasn't that great for me, but I had an unusual experience. Beware of women on other birth control forums- its pretty good in here, but on a lot of forums the women went on because they had a reason to complain, the ones who loved it don't go on to whine about it!!

Know what I mean?

Every form of bc has people who love it and people who hate it. Most forms of birth control work fine for most people.

New to Mirena
It's been almost a week since I've had the mirena "inserted". It was very painful at first and I a lot of cramping(I'm used to it because I have BAD periods). My legs hurt a little bit as well...after a couple of days the bleeding almost stopped, right now I'm just spotting. This is the first forum I've found were people is neutral. The other forums scared me to a point I called my GYN to get it removed. She left me a message saying I should try it for at least 1 month. I'm 21, no kids, and the thing that scares me is my fertility being affected...this is the first BC method I'm trying because it seems convenient. I like the fact that I can stop using condoms because I'm allergic to them...the experience hasn't been bad at all, so I think I will try it...

No no no, you won't go infertile from it. Don't worry. Actually, fertility will return really quickly after you get it out. I'd go so far as to say try it for at least 6 months. By then you'll probably be sold on it, or sure that you hate it.

There are risks with every kind of birth control, but they're really low.

Thanks
Today is the first day I had sexual intercourse since I've had the Mirena...I have a little bit of cramping, nothing major, but I'm really loving the fact that I don't have to worry about using those "not so nice to me" condoms or getting pregnant. I guess the cramping and lower back problems will go away with time.

PD. Thanks for your words..I needed something positive Wink

It took a few months for my cramping to stop with Mirena. At first, they were so bad that I wanted it removed, but I stuck with it because I didn't want to waste $600. Since the cramping and bleeding has stopped, I love Mirena! I love not having to worry about an unexpected pregnancy and when I'm ready to get pregnant again, this baby will be planned Wink Kyleigh was a pleasant surprise Very Happy

I don't think Mirena has any effect on sex drive at all...

When I got mine inserted, it did hurt. It hurt for a few weeks. Just like very bad menstrual cramping. Sometimes it was especially bad and felt like I was having contractions again Confused

No infections yet... I've had it for a little over a year.

My worry now is that I started bleeding again (I had stopped altogether a few months ago after bleeding straight for 7 months).. It's now day 7 and I am going to be making an appointment with my doctor.... Scared.

i had mirena put in after my first kid, i didnt have a period the whole 8 mo i had it in place, it also became painfull when we would have sex and i kept getting bladder infections, and after my second child i had paraguard put in and same problem so i guess it all depends on your body and how it reacts to the iud. but i do know that they are not for me

Hi
I've had the Mirena for 11 days now. I even forget I have it there now hehe. I'm still spotting,it's not that bad. About the infections...I tought I had a yeast infection a couple of days ago but I think I was just irritated because it went away. Back in the day IUD's caused a ot of infections, but my GYN told me that they make the cords with a different material now so it's not how it used to...

PD. Where's everyone from?
