Q: Question

Hi everyone, this is my first real topic here, so i'll run with the story.

Yeah, I am an emt-b...Minus all of the obstectrics and maternity training, that's pretty much all past me, hence my question here. Anything else medical, i'm the man heh.

Anyway, here's what happend. On feb. 27th, I was having sex with my new girlfriend, and the condom broke. Only noticed it after the fact. According to my little ob wheel I got at work, she was a few days past ovulation, but I could be wrong...Obstectric fool here.

That same night I got a good doctor friend of mine to prescribe plan b, emergency contriception for mary. She took it and all, and began spotting a week before her period. I was under the impression that that would be normal, as emergency contriception is pretty much one big ol hormone treatment.

So, she's supposed to have her period april 1st. I'm a nervous wreck, as I don't feel i'm ready to bring another human into the world...However mary wants to stay pregnant if she is. What i'm trying to find out is the likelyhood of her being pregnant. I mean, i'm probobly going to find out soon enough myself here, but some extra warning can't hurt.

I mean, i've talked it over with my partner at work, she says it's unlikely but it's still foggy. I'm just looking for more information.

Thanks!

Who knows all you can really do is wait. I am not sure how well emergency contraception works or how effective it is in preventing pregnancy. April 1st is right around the corner and dont get too jumpy if she is still late. The pill she took could have played with her hormones and delayed her period. Sorry lol I tried to help the best I knew how. Good luck and keep us all informed there is alot of wonderul people here always willing to give advice and support! ~ erica.

I think you took all the right precautions. I dont have the actual satistics of how many women become pregnant after taking the morning after pill but im sure it is pretty effective. You may try searching the web for some actual facts about the morning after pill if you want a more conclusive answer!

If she still was pregnant, there would be a very very high chance that the baby would have birth defects. Due to the hormonal emergency contraceptive! I highly doubt she is pregnant, and there is a chance that she will miss her period april 1 st, but that will probably be because of the emergency contraceptive.

Generally, plan b is right around 98% effective. I'm hoping it was effective in this case, as this ambulance jockey does not get paid well enough to support another member of the family!

actually, the recent findings on plan b indicate that it won't cause any real defects, as it is taken early, and hit or miss. I know other contriceptives have been found to cause birth defects though.

Within 48 hours. I don't remember exactly when...I know it was within the 105 hour window though. I'm hoping for the best, whichever it may be! Thanks for all the replies, keep 'em coming!

I wouldnt worry too much! It may be possible that her period may come late or early since she took the pill though! So even if she doesent have it right away I still wouldnt worry!

I found this on line-it should be useful:
they work best when the first dose is taken within 72 hours — during this time they can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75-89 percent. The sooner they are started, the better. Ecps will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Breast tenderness, irregular bleeding, dizziness, and headaches may also occur.

Combined ecps reduce the risk of pregnancy by 75 percent is started within 72 hours. For example, eight out of 100 women will become pregnant after having unprotected sex once during the second or third week of their cycles. But only two out of 100 will become pregnant after taking ecps.
Progestin-only ecps reduce the risk of pregnancy by 89 percent if started within 72 hours. Only one woman out of 100 will become pregnant after taking progestin-only ecps.
Emergency iud insertion reduces the risk of pregnancy by 99.9 percent. Only one out of 1,000 women will become pregnant after emergency iud insertion.

Ecps work best taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse.
The closer a woman is to ovulation at the time of unprotected intercourse, the greater her chances of pregnancy.

I've done plan b (condom broke) and the stats are that 87% of women who do plan b will get their periods within 1 week of the original date. She shouldnt be pregnant as it reduces the chances of pregnancy down to 1% and she made the window too so try not to worry too much but hang in there
