Small disk protrusion at L5 L6 w/boney outgrowths - nerve ? Posted: 10-07-07 16:09pm
Since a car crash 7 years ago I have had
chronic lower back pain. I take mst 15 mg
twice a day for pain with some relief. I
have been told by physio my sacroliac
joint felt mushy just after the car crash.
Acupuncturist said pelvis out of place as
did chiropracter. Acupuncturist said it
was fixed. Pain specialist thought facet
joint problem injections didnt work,
should i ask him to send me to a
neuroligist and will he think i am
undermining him. MRI showed small disk
protrusion at L5 L6 with some boney
outgrowths. Could it be a trapped nerve as
I also have pain in my buttocks and thighs
Any help would be appreciated

Hello Country Girl,
I'm most concerned that it has been seven
years ago since your most unfortunate
accident in which you have experienced
chronic lower back pain. To be frank, it
should not have taken this long for a
proper diagnosis to have been made. To be
frank, too much lost time. Too much time
for things to have gotten worse. What has
not been done has not been done.
SOOOooo forward. Where to go from here?
To a neurologist and without delay. DON'T
wait for your PM doc to recommend a
specialist, YOU are the one that must take
the "bull by the horns". YOU need to seek
out the very best neurologist/spine
surgeon that you can find. Talk with
those you know who have had spine
problems. Find out the names of the
doctors they worked with. Find out if
they liked their spine doc and DID he/she
work to get rid of their spinal pain. Ask
questions, and more questions.
When is the last time that you had an MRI?
If within a year - good. If longer, then
you need a new MRI.
My apology for being so direct. I'm just
very concerned that too much time has been
lost. Don't delay in getting professional
analysis from a neurologist/spinal
surgeon, and yes from a pain management
doctor.
Us spineys have a lot to contend with. It
isn't a "yes" or "no". Much has to be
analyzed to determine what is best for our
individual bodies.
I wish you the very best in the days to
come.
Take care. HUGS!!!

Hello Country Girl,
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, our
back pain does rob us of who we are. I
know what you mean.
I so wish I could give you a
recommendation for an outstanding spinal
doc in Dublin, however, I unfortunately
can not. I tuly hope someone from your
area sees your thread and can help you.
Country Girl, going beyond that - Do your
own research. Check out the local
hospitals for the neurologist that those
at the hospital look up to. Check out
every source that you can think of. Give
a call to the local professional
"football" team headquarters. Find out
the spinal doc they turn to when one of
their players has a spinal injury. Don't
stop looking or asking questions.
