Treating Shoulder Disorders :: athroscopic surgery w/o PT ?

Curious about your experiences in treating shoulder disorders? Anyone go right to athroscopic surgery without physical therapy? What was physical therapy like? Did it help?

I have several issues with the shoulder including artheritis of the A/C Joint, calcium deposits, and bone spurs.....one or all may be contributing to impingement.

Your thoughts and insight would be very much appreciated.

Not to biased at all, but I am a Physical Therapist and woud recomment that you go to therapy. What would happen there is that you would be treated by means of some heat or ice, massage, stretches, and progressive exercises to avoid secondary problems from the surgery, and to mainly rehabilitate you to full function. Without therapy you run a risk of healing at 80% instead of 95-100%. After the surgery you will not be able to move your arm fully, and you might get stiff, so the therapist moves it gently for you and teaches you the proper exercises to perform t get you strong again.

I had a SLAP tear fixed and generally they dont heal without surgery. My doc went right to PT.

PT afterwards is really important to regain full range of motion.

Over several years I have tried PT, Accupuncture, the Chiropractor and Cortisone shots.

Everything worked to a degree....but what brought my pain level down to near zero was: a cortisone shot to start, followed by THE CORRECT EXERCISES (I had lots of wrong ones recommended) for my condition.

Accupunture and the chiropractor did provide temporary relief, but YOGA and Strengthening exercises 4-6 days a week (about 20 minutes each day) have been like the miracle cure.
