The world is very politically correct now. There was a time that even in hospitals and institutions..."retarded" was the word used for "delayed." My son was born pre-maturely and has both cerebral palsy and also he is technically....retarded....only his official diagnosis is....."developmentally delayed." Retarded is not a "bad" word if used in the context of delayed...but it can also be used as an insult....and I don't particularly find it a hurtful term....but more a childish term showing someone doesn't really have anything better to say.

The new politically correct term is "intellectual disability" at least in the adult world

Yeah, I'd never call a developmentally delayed person retarded, I've known people in that situation.

Working in psych and with "retarded" adults and children, I would never use that word as an insult. Just like I wouldn't say "you're so weak, you must have cancer!"

But I know that a lot of people say it without realizing the reality behind it.

I'm with you here.

If you wouldn't use it in the presence of a mentally retarded individual, then you shouldn't use it at all.

exactly! My associate with the word means stunted.. retarded growth for example ; stunted growth. It is not an offensive word to me.

I know this is way off subject, but since everything else is shot to piss on this forum...

Would you call someone "retarded' if a mentally retarded individual was around you within earshot?

What does that mean?

There are some uneducated women who think, 'oops, i got pregnant.' Then, they head off to the clinic to abort. I'm talking about the women who go in abortion after abortion after abortion. The ones that don't take any form of birth control or take any steps to NOT get pregnant, then head off to abort once they mistakenly get a positive test result. Those are the women who use abortion as a form of birth control. See what I am trying to say?

I'm all for women having the right to choose what happens with their pregnancy, but at the same time, it is so very wrong to not use protection and use abortion as an alternative.

I feel that some people are going to bash me for what I said on this one... Rolling Eyes

I certainly wouldn't O.o Not on purpose anyway.

I really try to filter my words depending on company. I did teach myself to refrain from calling things "gay" (like, Oh man, no chocolate milk? That's gay!) because it is an insult, and I get offended when others use it. I should probably do the same thing with retarded. I substituted "stupid" instead of "gay", so that may be why I use retarded more often, since I use it much in the same way. "Oh man, no chocolate milk? That's stupid!".

I still do not understand what all the fuss is about with me posting my valid opinions! First Eiri she proclaims she "Hates" me than she pretends to ignore me but now she insists I be banned. All for standing by my words and opinions, which are obviously contrary to hers, nonetheless completely valid!

If this is true, I agree with you. However, I doubt it is true, because it does not make sense. It only makes sense to a pro-lifer who wants to disparage women. Look at embarrassed on this forum. Every abortion is "frivolous". It's not very far from that way of thinking, to imagining whorish women aborting month after month.

But think logically (a.k.a. not like a pro-lifer) for a moment.

Being pregnant, even for the short time before an abortion, is horrid. Contant puking, missed work or school. I was bedridden with nausea 24/7, and so were many, many of the women I know.

Then, finally, the abortion. It's terrifying surgery. It's painful, even if you get knocked out it's horrible because coming out of the anesthesia makes you vomit all over again.

It's expensive. Who has $500 to throw out month after month?

Now, who would go through ALL OF THAT, instead of popping a pill once a day, getting an IUD which you never have to think about, or an implant, also requiring no thought?

See? Makes no sense that someone would use abortion as birth control.

There are women like this....and I am not saying this to disparage women....I am stating fact. Are they the majority...no...but they are out there...and telling yourself they aren't won't change that. Embarrassed does not hold the beliefs of most pl. Stating that the majority of women have frivolous abortions is both incorrect and an insult. While I am pl to the core....I am also a woman who has been pregnant with an unexpected pregnancy and pregnancy that I was thrilled about. The decision to keep a child is not a frivolous one...so whay would anyone think the decision to abort would be? It is not like making a decision to throw an unwanted dress in the trash...it is making the decision to end a human life....and even hardcore pc know this and I believe take this in to consideration before having an abortion.

It is much easier to make a point if you don't insult someone in the process. It also makes you much more believable if you are able to stand behind your facts and opinions without tearing someone elses down. JMHO

Did you ever consider that your experience is not everyone elses experience? Some women...as you say have horrid morning sickness in the first trimester...but usually after that...they feel fine. Some women actually feel better pregnant than they do when they aren't. I however did have horrible nausea the first few weeks with all my pregnancies...but once it was over....I felt fine....and I went along with my normal life....not missing a beat.

You make an excellent and logical point....but you are forgetting...all humans...even women....don't always act logically. Why would a woman put herself out on the street and allow a man to sell her body and abuse her every day? I don't have the answer to that...but many women prostitute themselves all the time....and it doesn't make any more sense than the scenario you just gave? Why do women stay in abusive relationships? Again....not logical. So saying that you doubt there are women out there who don't use bc (i.e. the pill) but have no problem using abortion as bc and have one abortion after another....is an unrealistic view of life.

I wish we had the stats on how many women actually do that. I don't know ANY. Anyone I know who has had an abortion did it from a whoops, was on bc, condom broke, or they learned from it and got on bc after it happened.

I've heard of it (using abortion as bc) but I wonder if anyone actually does it.

You don't have to trust me...I respect the fact that you question. Saddly though....some stats just aren't available....who wants to admit that this is how they use their "choice"....I will try and do more research on the subject. I was speaking from what I myself had seen...but I realize that actual collected stats from a neutral sorce always trump someones word.

Yep, there are women who do. I know a woman who never used birth control, she's had two abortions and carried to term (or almost term in the one where she had a stillbirth) three times. She finally had her tubes tied but only under court order.

Personally, I think it's best that these people do not parent. If they aren't responsible enough to use contraception, how are they responsible enough to parent a child?
