hi all,
i am awaiting bilateral TMJ replacement surgery and privately went for metal allergy testing to make sure there would be no problems when I had the implants however I am allergic to cobalt, chromium and nickel! So I am a bit stuck now. both the main manufacturers of the implants use the same ingrediants with cobalt, chromium and nickel making up most of the mandibular component? does anyone know of anyone else having metal allergies? is there any alternative? any ideas or suggestions or possibilities would be really gratefully received as I am finished with my pre-op orthodontics and am ready for surgery preparation, eg CT scan and custom made joints being sent off for etc. This is now going to prolong the process enormously I would imagine BUT at least I found out now rather than have my body reject the implants post operatively. Please please help. Thanks

Hi Tracy650,

Ive just had a custom made Titanium Concept Joint Replacement. I have previously had a replacement that failed and it turned out that I was allergic to the implant. I had three rounds of allergy testing and I to was allergic to the Cobalt, Nickle, chromium and a few others so my consultant phoned around and the Guys at Concepts were fantastic and could make a Joint that I was not allergic to, so I had the surgery three weeks ago and everything is looking good. It takes rougley 6 weeks from the CT scans to the joints being made so hopefuly Concepts will be able to help you and you will get the surgery that you need real soon.
Take care
Lorraine
