Hi
Ive recently given birth and went to the doctor to have smears done. I then found out i have clamidia. Im not sure when i caught this, but during my labour swabs were taken, are these for STDs? If so wld i have caught it after giving birth? Is it likely my baby is affected?

Please help!

General Information
Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacteria that can cause several types of infections in humans. It is primarily transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact. It is also possible for an infected mother to pass the infection to her infant at birth.

Symptoms

Many people who are infected with Chlamydia have no symptoms so a person can "carry" the bacteria for many years without knowing they are infected, and can unknowingly infect others over time.

Although the majority of women infected with Chlamydia have NO symptoms, some of the possible symptoms are:

Yellow vaginal discharge
Bleeding after intercourse
Pain with intercourse
Burning in the pelvis or genitals
Burning with urination
Dull aching in the lower abdomen
Swollen glands in the groin
Irregular menstrual bleeding
Inflammation/ reactive changes on Pap smear
Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which may combine some of the above with a fever and a general feeling of illness

Possible Complications

If someone has Chlamydia and does not receive proper treatment they could have the following complications:

Women
PID (infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and surrounding tissues)
Inflammation of the liver
Difficulty or inability to become pregnant
Increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, or stillbirth for women with Chlamydia during a pregnancy

I think you should inform your doctor and get your daughter checked out if you think you may have gotten chlamydia during your pregnancy.

They do not test you for chlamydia during labor.

No the blood was for something else. How was your chlamydia diagnosed a few weeks ago? By a swab. That would be the ONLY way it could be diagnosed in pregnancy. You would have had this procedure at your first OB appointment. Everyone has a pap smear in early pregnancy.

Have you changed partners since pregnancy? If so, maybe you did get it afterwards. But there is no way any of us could say. It would be a good idea to mention this to your doctor so if there is a chance your daughter has something, she would be treated! If she needs to be treated, she needs to be treated.
