Q: Itching!!

For the past week I have been itching pretty badly in the whole vaginal area. My labia, or lips (not sure of the proper term), is red and almost burns when touched. I am not currently sexually active, so I doubt it is an STD. However I was active about 4 months ago, but wouldn't an STD have shown symptoms by now? What could cause all this itching??

It could be a yeast infection. OMG, they can itch, itch, itch!

Do you have discharge also?

I know that it is not a yeast infection, but it could possibly be another kind of infection. I have never had unprotected sex, so I doubt it is an STD. However some STDs such as HPV are spread through contact, which inevitably occurs during sex. However I think that causes genital warts, and I haven't seen any of those. Is it possible for them to be on the inside the vagina? I have heard those cause itching.

You'd have lumps. It does not sound like warts.

How do you know it isn't yeast?

Well from what I know, yeast infections cause a nasty cottage cheese like discharge, and I don't have that. However the discharge is a little weird, and it has a slight odor, but I thought that all discharge did.

Are you sure its not warts. I'm a little paranoid. Is the vaginal opening supposed to be fleshy? is that normal? it said that warts could be flesh colered??

Warts would be hard though. And it would be the WART that itched, not everything.

Yeast infections do not have to include cottage cheese discharge. Don't so readily think it isn't yeast - it sounds like it to me.

Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infection
vaginal itching
vaginal burning
vaginal irritation
painful urination
painful sexual intercourse
odorless vaginal discharge (may be thick whitish-gray and cottage-cheese-like or may be watery in consistency)

That does fit everything. The only thing is the discharge does have an odor. Is that normal or could that be a symptom?

I had discharge that smelled like I was baking bread in my undies - but it can be odorless too.

No. Discharge that smells bad can be a sign of infection.

For yeast infection? Over the counter medication. You can get it at the grocery store, walmart, a pharmacy, etc.

Well what if it is a different type of infection, such as vaginitis?
What is the treatment for that?

I'm not sure. You can also get a prescription for yeast infections, I did from my campus gyno. One pill, wait a week, and yeast is gone! lol.

That is a trip to the doctor's office and a swab on your cervix.

You should see a doc. If you have a yeast infection you can treat it with otc medication. But if you're not sure what it is you should see your doc because if you treat a bacterial infection with yeast infection medicine, you'll make it worse.

Also, untreated bacterial infections can lead to pid, which is serious.
And some std's can be dormant for a while.
If you're ever not sure what you have, you should go in.

Smile
