Who Is the Father??? Please Help!! Posted: 10-02-07 11:49am
The start of my last menstrual period was
on March 2, 2007. My menstrual cycles are
irregular. I had unprotected sex with my
fiancee almost every
weekend(Friday-Monday) when he visited me
for the month of February,March and April.
On March 23 I had sex with a friend in a
party. Can you please help me in finding
out who the father is??
HELP!!!!

You are going to need a paternity test.
That is the only way to tell for sure.
Since you had sex with the friend and your
fiancee during the same time periods, you
will need paternal DNA testing. This can
be done during amniocentesis during
pregnancy or after birth with a swab of
the cheek. Either way, I think you should
let your fiancee know what is going on. If
you are going to marry this man, he
deserves to know the truth.

You will have to wait until the baby is
born to have a DNA test to determine who
the father is. Be honest with everyone
about the situation. It will only be
harder on you (and that baby!) later if
you aren't.

You DO NOT have to wait until the baby is
born to have a DNA test performed. This is
the second time today that I have read
this coming from you.
A doctor can extract DNA from an
amniocentesis. This can determine who the
father is before the child is born.

Generally, and I posted this before a
doctor WILL NOT perform an amniocentisis
because of the RISK to the BABY. If there
is a reason for the amnio anyway, they
will do it. Like, if they are already
testing for birth defects, genetic
abnormalities, etc.
But most doctors will refuse to risk a
child's life when a few months from now
they can merely SWAB the child's cheek!

The procedure is
not risk free. The baby could be killed as
a direct result of this procedure.
Approximately one in every two hundred
pregnancies in which this test is
performed is lost as a
result.

Can I Determine
My Babys DNA While Pregnant?
It is possible to determine your baby’s
DNA while you are pregnant. There are two
specific tests, the amniocentesis and the
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS for short)
that are often done during pregnancy to
test a baby’s DNA. There are several
reasons that parents might want to
determine a baby’s DNA while pregnant.
These might include paternity testing,
gender determination, or testing to
determine whether the baby is at risk for
specific genetic or birth defects.
The timing of DNA testing during pregnancy
is crucial. There are essentially two
specific windows of time in which DNA
testing can be done. The first window is
between the 10th and 13th week of
pregnancy. During this time, a CVS can be
done. With CVS, your health care provider
will insert a thin tube or needle into the
vagina, through the cervix, to try to
obtain little finger-like pieces of tissue
attached to the uterine wall, known as
chorionic villi. Your health care provider
will use an ultrasound to help guide the
tube or needle. Chorionic villi comes from
the same fertilized egg that your fetus
comes from, and consequently has the same
DNA makeup as your baby.
The second window of opportunity comes
after the first, between the 14th and the
20th week of pregnancy. During an
amniocentesis, your health care provider
will utilize an ultrasound machine to help
him guide a thin needle into your uterus,
by way of your abdomen. This needle will
draw out a little bit of amniotic fluid.
This amniotic fluid is then tested for
DNA. There are some risks with
amniocentesis, including a chance of harm
to the baby as well as a chance of
miscarriage. You might also experience
leaking of amniotic fluid, vaginal
bleeding, or cramping.
Determining your baby’s DNA while
pregnant can be expensive. Both of the
procedures listed above will likely cost
somewhere between $1000 and $2000. In many
cases, unless your baby or your pregnancy
are at risk, your insurance company will
not pay this fee. In addition, these tests
cannot be done at a whim. Each requires a
doctor’s recommendation to have the
testing done.

I never said it wasn't risky. I said it
was possible. Some doctors offer
amniocentesis during all pregnancies to
test for down syndrome, defect, etc. All I
said was that it WAS possible to check for
DNA during pregnancy.
I totally, 100% agree with you that it
would be a lot better and less painful to
do testing after the baby is born.

It is possible. But at the same time,
people should know the risks and many
doctors will not do it because of those
risks. Additionally, the expense is huge -
up to $2,000! That is outrageous and most
men seem to be trying to get out of having
to pay so they would take one look at that
and say 'No. Way.'
Even with the risk of 1 in 200 deaths
(which sounds low enough), I would not
subject my baby or my own body to that.
There isn't any reason to. People think
they need to know RIGHT NOW. What will
that change? You can know right now, but
there is nothing you can do about
anything. You cannot even go to court
until the baby is born because it isn't
here yet.
So, from my standpoint, it just seems
easier to say "You have to wait until the
baby is born" Because, really, all this
fuss and you and I both know this girl is
going to wait until the baby is born
before anything happens. As is the guy in
the other thread. Also, $250 vs $2,000?
Yeah, they are waiting.

Well saying "you cannot get a DNA test
before the baby is born" is going to
confuse some people. It's possible to do,
just not recommended for selfish reasons.
My doctor offered me one (without even
explaining all the risks!) and I told him
no way because I knew how dangerous it
was.
Instead of telling people it's not
possible to test for DNA pre-birth, you
should say it isn't recommended to do
amniocentesis on basis of paternity alone
due to the risk of fatality for the baby.
