Hi, I have a few questions. I'm 20 years old and both my grandmothers on both sides died of cancer. One was breast and the other liver. I was curious what age your supposed to get a mammogram and colonoscopy. I know your supposed to get a pad smear at age 18 but i'm still a virgin and I'm mortified of having it done since i have anxiety disorder. I was wonder since my grandmothers both had it am i likely to get it younger even though they were in there 60's 70's. Also i know even though I'm a virgin i still need a pad smear it's just i'm scared it will rip my hymen and also I'm scared of feeling dirty after i have it done or like being violated.

Mammograms normally start at age 40 or 50. Yes cancer is hereditary. You can start self breast exams now.

DO NOT be afraid of pap-smears! Get a female gyno, and everything will be fine! Be sure to tell them you're anxious about it! It's nothing to be frightened of.

You probably don't have a "whole" hymen right now, just so you know. You probably broke it during sports, bike riding, using tampons or masturbating, etc. Virginity has nothing to do with your hymen. There is NO reason to feel "dirty" without one. Also, a pap smear will probably NOT break your hymen unless it is too thick to do the examination, in which case you'd want it broken before sex, wouldn't you? That would be best, otherwise your first time is going to be incredibly unhappy, painful, and not the beautiful experience it should be. I was born without a normal hymen! I never felt "dirty" Razz

Actually i just heard that self exams don't work as well as a mammogram. Fear is not something i can turn off and on, i have no control over it. I will tell her i am afraid but i rather chop my own arm off then get it done. I don't do sports , exercise or use Tampons. Also i don't masturbate up there. I know not to feel dirty or afarid it's all in my head but my aniexty is very sever almost to a point were it suprises everybody. I mean i would feel dirty after the examination the whole thing seems very violating to me. Well that's a good thing it's not something you want to feel, it makes you feel bad.

Well of course they don't work as well as mammograms, that's why older women have to get them!! But young women don't need them, and are encouraged to do a self-breast exam.

I think you may need therapy in order to be able to get through this, it sounds like a very severe detriment. It will most likely affect your sex life too. Just because you'll be in love someday doesn't mean your anxiety will turn off then, either.

You should start with mams about 10 years before the the youngest female person in your family contracted cancer.

Alright I'll start doing the self exams , Thanks for the info. Oh i'm seeing a psychologist but he's a man XD i don't think he would want to talk about a pap smear or stuff like that. I suppose i can just find a gyno and hopefully she can help or something. Smile Thanks for the help.

Smile Thanks for the info Opal.
