I have surgery scheduled and it is in the afternoon. I have to fast from 7 am until surgery at 3:30--why?

Because human beings react very oddly to general anesthesia and other medicines used during surgery. The body often regurgitates any food inside of it and this is very dangerous when you are unconscious.

No food after midnight is a good rule, and make sure you don't drink anything at all within 3 hours of surgery. Water or clear juice is fine until then.
