Movable Lump In Neck - history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis Posted: 10-01-07 11:01am
For the past year or so I have felt a
somewhat hard, movable bump in my neck.
It is right below where the jaw meets the
neck, I believe it is the submandibular
gland. It is not much bigger than the left
side but it feels like it moves around
more, as if it is slightly detatched or
loose. I feel around for it a lot, which
could be making it worse, but I find it
odd that one side is slightly
larger/longer down my neck and it seems to
be more movable. Also, sometimes I taste a
salty discharge coming from the right
botton side of my mouth, and somtimes
shart twinges of pain on that same side. I
have asked dr.'s about it but they don't
seem too concerned. However they haven't
looked into it much. I would really
appreciate any help or opinions on what
this is and if it's normal or not. I'm
afraid of salivary gland cancer. I'm
21/female/history of Hashimoto's
thyroiditis and hyperparathyroidism.

Hi!
Are you experiencing swollen and painful
gland from time to time or you have this
gland swollen constantly for a year? Is
the skin over the gland red or swollen?
Are you experiencing fatigue, fevers,
chills, or sweats?
Have you noticed that the gland swelling
is caused by certain foods and if it's
getting swollen right after meal?
I guess you have obstruction of your
gland's duct ( the gland is trying to
expel its saliva and the result is
swollen, tender gland.
There are few reasons for gland's
obstruction. Salts in saliva can
precipitate in the salivary glands and
form small stones that are causing
stopping the flow of saliva. The main duct
can be narrowed due to previous infections
and trauma. Infection or other
inflammation of the gland itself are
causing extrinsic pressure on the duct and
in very rare cases an extrinsic pressure
can be due to tumor formed near the duct.

is just swollen from time to time,
sometimes more swollen than other times.
The skin is not red or swollen over the
gland. No fever or sweats, anything like
that. I do not notice that certain foods
cause anything. Is some assymetry normal
in these glands?
