Q: Unable to Take a Deep Satisfying Breath

small history: im 21 years old, 5' 11", 160lbs, average build. been a light smoker since 17, no prior health problems besides having my tonsils out due to chronic tonsilitis(adnoids not removed). No allergies.

For the past month i've been having trouble taking beep satisfying breaths and my body is constantly making me yawn or try to take a deep breath. Sometimes im succesful but ill be doing it again soon after. Also not every day, but every few days, a headache in the lower-right backside of my head, and stuffy nose, sometimes with sinus pressure. i'v heard many different things like, allergies, stress, anxiety, emphysema, and bronchitis, but im not coughing at all, no tightness in chest, occasionally a mild pain in my chest but they are far between, and have never had allergies before.

Any Ideas?

my therapist told me that those of us with anxiety tend to breathe into our chest causing shorter breaths. One excercise he had me do was lay on my back with one hand on my chest and one on my stomach. Breath in for 3-5 seconds and breath out for 3-5 seconds just as one smooth motion. Do this for 3 minutes he says and then for 9 more minutes breath in for 3-5 seconds and breath out twice as long as you breathed in.

Hope this helps...Im not a doctor or anything but I am currently in therapy again and this is what I was suggested to do and it does help. Object being to train yourself to breathe down into the diaphram so that the oxygen gets to the bottom of your lungs where it will send the most oxygen out to your blood cells!

Anxiety And Stress Will Do It!
Yeap, It can effect your breathing. Try and talk yourslef down if you can. Sit and relax for a few. Take breaths through your nose and out your mouth. Like you are blowing up a balloon. Make sure your breathing is long coming out then you breath in. Should try and count to four when you exhail. Try it, it may just help.
