Q: Was John Edward's Comment Racist?

"We start with the president of the United States saying to America, "We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem." And the idea that we're just going to keep incarcerating, keep incarcerating--pretty soon, we're not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They're all going to be in prison--or dead, one of the two."

Well, yes it was. However, he was pulling not only from a racial stereotype but also an economic one as well.

His message though, was one of fixing a problem; he clearly doesn't want to see young men imprisoned no matter what their race is. Still a racist comment.

I don't know- was he saying that in a racist way or was he trying to point out the fact that young african american boys are incarcerated at a higher rate to show the racism in the system??

I can't tell. I hadn't heard when he said it.

I mean it is a fact that more african american men are incarcerated. I don't think it's because they're inherently bad- I think it's because of the disadvantage they are put in sometimes and the racism by the police, teachers, etc. You know what I mean?

What I hope is that he was trying to say he wanted to address the issues of inequality.

You're right! It's out of context. Maybe he was already talking about african americans.

Before I linked to the article I thought you meant John Edwards the psychic guy. And I'm like, what does that have to do with dead people?
Lol....

I blame Fox news. How do other news stations report on the comment? Because I don't know the rest of what he said.

No. African American males 18-24 have the highest homicide rates, the highest incarceration rates. The Bureau of Justice stats reports that almost one in three (32%) of black males will be incarcerated at some point in their lives. 25% more black males are in prison than in higher education. It's racist if it's not true. This is statistically true. It's a travesty.

We discuss this in our classes frequently. No one sees this as racism as it it not some false stat designed to discriminate against African American males.

John Edwards is right; building prisons is not the answer.

I have no idea what the answer is. Probably not voting for John Edwards, though. Smile

I'm sick of the mainstream party lines.

Vote Green!!!

Edit to add:

Well, let me just add it depends on who's running. Some of the ones up to grab the nomination are hooligans.

Yeah- I gave up voting green after the last couple disasters.

Maybe when things calm down I will again.
