I'm 21 years old, generally in good health other than this problem! I'll explain as fully as possible, sorry if this is very long...

I went for an STI screen a couple of months ago, was all negative apart from B.V. which I was given Metronidazole (I think) for. At the same time I mentioned to the doctor that I had been having some lower abdominal pain; he gave me an internal examination and ruled out P.I.D. I was fine after that, but over the summer suffered from a recurring ear infection which I was on numerous courses of antibiotics for - Amoxicillin twice, and Cefaclor/Cefalon (can't remember the name). I then developed an infection in my wisdom teeth and was given Metronidazole again. I'm not sure if any of that is important but I wanted to point out the amount of antibiotics I have recently been on in case it has any relevance.

Moving on...

I took the morning-after pill about a month ago (I am on the pill but I had been on all these antibiotics and didn't want to take the risk). My period after that was 5 days late (started on the 3rd September), lasted for longer and was very heavy and more painful than usual, with terrible mood swings and lower back pain which I don't normally have. I put this down to the morning-after pill but about two days after my period had finished I began having spotting with thick, clear sticky discharge and blood clots, unlike my usual period blood, accompanied by a slight fever, occasional shooting pain in my legs, nausea and excruciating lower abdominal pain in a very specific area on the left. I went to a GUM clinic for testing and all the tests were negative but I was diagnosed with supposed P.I.D. due to the symptoms I was displaying (I'm at a loss as to how I got it; both my partner and I are STI-free - could it have been the B.V. from a couple of months back?). I am on a two-week course of Ofloxacin (400mg twice daily) and Metronidazole (400mg three times daily). After I had been taking the antibiotics for three days I was feeling worse, the pain had spread to the lower right of my abdomen aswell, my lower back was agony, I kept getting sweats, dizziness and headaches and on the second morning of taking the antibiotics I woke up genuinely feeling like I was going to die. I don't know if these were side-effects of the medication but I felt awful, so on the third day I went to A&E - still in terrible pain and still spotting - and was told by a doctor to basically deal with it, keep taking the antibiotics and take painkillers and anti-spasmodics for the cramps. Now I have been taking the antibiotics for 8 days and I feel generally better without the feeling of heaviness and weakness I had before, but yesterday the pain in the lower left of my abdomen has returned. It's certainly not as bad as it was last week but I am still worried. It's the same kind of cramping pain as before, and it's worse if I move around or do anything, so I've been pretty much resting at home. There's no bleeding, but I have started getting headaches again and I am not normally a headache sufferer. My period is not due for another week. The antibiotics have also given me awful thrush which is getting me down, and I keep reading on the internet about the high risk of infertility associated with P.I.D. which is worrying me.

Any advice would be appreciated, I will go and see my G.P. on Monday but to be honest I'm needing some reassurance right now! Call me paranoid...

Normally I would say see your doc but since you are, all I'm gonna say is good luck!! Random thought- are you treating the thrush too? Because that should be pretty easy to treat, although might come back before you get off the antibiotics.

Untreated PID can cause infertility, but don't worry so much! You're getting it treated. Did they actually do a lab test for PID the second time? I do think you can develop PID from BV, and the timespan of a couple months would explain why you're feeling so rotten now. Just remember to voice your concerns to the GP to make sure you have a good diagnosis.

And wear a condom until this all clears up- you know your pills won't be effective for a while, (I'd ask the doc how long) and the morning after pill (wonderful though it is) stinks. It made my period awful and I had similar problems.

Good luck!! I'm sure you'll make it. Smile

I Am Having the Exact Same Symptoms.
Hi Kelski,

I have just come across your blog while searching for answers to my own problem and your story matches mine exact. I am 5 days into taking meds and same felt better at first but am still having weird cramping. I know your post is a few months old now but I'm really hoping you can touch base with me about how are you doing now and also to compare stories. I hope you are well. Thank you.

I am experiencing the same thing although I have start my period and am having horrible cramps and am still uncomfortable. I am at a loss as to why the symptoms still remain and would like to hope that things have cleared for you now. It is very worrying as you search the web and keep getting stories of infertility and end up wondering if there is something seriously wrong with you. I started randomly bleeding to with bright red blood and was told to stick it out with the two weeks worth of antibiotics and have had one injected into my bum too. I will wait to see an improvement as my symptoms seem to come and go.

2 years? Wow.. How long did you have the infection for roughly? It is a scary thing because it could happen to anybody it's not just STD's that can cause PID. Are you off the med now? I still get occasional pain mind you i thought it would of gone by now. Did you partner pass on the infection then? Maybe he should of got treated the same time as you just to make sure you can have safe sex again..? Hope your okay.

Pid
Just a month ago, the doctor prescribed me azythromax the one with the highest dosage and it didnt kick in. , i just felt the side effects.. So i was doomed! Im asking for a different kind antibiotic and she doesnt wanna give me anymore because thats the highest dosage already. So i cried coz i feel so helpless. I am disfunctional coz i cant do household chores and cant even have sex though that isnt really important to me now. So i tried drinking juiced apples and carrots twice a day, took 1000mg of vit c , 40 mg of zinc, lot of garlic too, and swedish bitters morning and evening, with meals and intervals. I started feeling ok now. The pain is lighter and slowly diminishing. Im on the first week of doing it. I also inserted betadine suppositories at night and im on third night last night. I hope the feeling of being free from pain contiues. Im just scared i need to do this regimen a lifetime. Im just waiting til the pain totally gets lost and never comeback. My partner and I never had sex for quite a while, which made him feel sad at times but he understands my situation. I'm just waiting till the pain is totally gone in my lower left side of the abdomen. And will get a check up to see if im cleared after a month of this regimen. I would also like to tell that my partner took medications and have rocephin and doxyclyn for six days but it was intended for seven days and we had sex. after an hour i felt pain after sex. though i was feeling very well before that. i guess the antibiotics didnt take effect yet on him because we were not able to finish his course of antibiotics. my bad and stupidity i gave in! U mentioned you were still having pain at times.. How do you manage or deal with it? Its nice to share stories with someone like you in this. I will wait for your reply. Smile

My partner hates taking antibiotics for no reason. for him he is healthy but he doesnt knkw there is bacteria on his penis, he knows taking antibiotics can also kill good bacteria. So we will end up using condoms. My pain from last year is kinda come and go. One week of pain and one week of no pain. A year of continuous depression because of this. But now I no longer feel depressed maybe its because of the swedish bitters and the garlic. Btw, i never had stds. It came from my BV that even taking a lot of antibiotics never get cured.

Hi there. I just came out of the hospital from being admitted for three days. My body didnt get rid of the infection. I was treated with heavy antibiotics and was given flagyl to be taken orally for seven days. I still feel a slight pain but lets see if it will get better. If it isnt, my doctor advised me to get back to the hospital after ten days of taking antibiotics to get a cultutre of the bacteria. Its really a very serious illness i would never wanna have. Im hopefill I'll get over with this.

PID, pain comes and goes even after 10 days of Antibiotics
I have been diagnosed with pid 10 days ago too as I was brought to the emergency room with horrible pain and nausea. Since taking the Antibiotics the symptoms come and go and I am really worried how long this can strech out and why it keeps on getting worse and then better again.
Would be great to hear when one of you girls got over it.
How long did that take and is the pain totally gone?

Same problem /pid
Im going through the same thing. i thought i had a uti but it came back negative so i got checked out and it ended up being pid. After starting medications it got worse, with more pain in my sides and lower back, fever, nausea ect all of the same. ended up going to the emergency room and had to go on intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks after the first week of antibiotics that didnt work. Antibiotics gave me yeast infection as well which just makes you feel worse. after all the deal i got my period 5 days late and although most of the pain has dissapeared i now have a slight fever and headaches as well.Pretty much feels like a nightmare. in total this problem has been going on for almost 2 months. Sometimes medications in the pill form dont work for certain people. The intravenous helped tremendously. However i got pain in my right side under near my rib cage and found out i got a ulcer from the anti inflammatory meds. I would get a second opinion. Dont listen to the doctor to just deal with it, listen to your conscience. if something doesnt feel right or isnt getting better then there could be another problem.

PID, treatment and questions 2nd day on antibiotics
Hi everyone...I'm sorry to see so many suffering...at the same time, it is sort of comforting to know I'm not alone...I also apologize in advance for the length of this...sorry!

So, I went to the gyno because of this:
A month ago, I thought i had a persistant UTI so I went to a urologist for testing. I tested negative for the UTI, but the Urologist thought it was a good idea to give me a pap smear to cover the bases and rule out a vaginal infection. When he did the Pap smear, it was the worst I have ever felt down there. Like, I thought he was being rough, but I don't think he was. I thought he cut me, or something! It hurt so bad, so after, he said I didn't have an infection. My husband and I waited to have sex for a while because of the pain i was sort of still in down there. sore.
a month later, and a week after my period, we had sex...

After my husband and I had sex, the next day and the next night I had a weird, painful burning feeling in what felt like my vagina, and it hurt on top of my pubic bone area, and felt like I had the urge to urinate--no pain in my pelvis, or anything like that, so I didn't think to describe it as "pelvic pain". Anyways, this went on for a while (from Sunday to thursday with the awful burning pain and pressure in my bladder like i had to urinate, but it didnt burn when I peed in my urethra, and I have had bladder infections in the past, recently actually, so i knew the difference). On Thursday, it actually hurt to walk...felt like all the pressure inside of me was going to come out somehow of my vagina, as weird as that sounds, and I started feeling paranoid, and thought it best since I'd never felt like this before to call a doctor).
(Has ANYONE else had these symptoms?)
When the gyno went to check me out down there, she could barely get the speculum inside because it hurt SO BAD. Like, it is always uncomfortable getting that done, but it was like the worst pain ever.
So they did a vaginal ultrasound, and found a bunch of fluid in my uterus on my left side, like a cyst had burst or something but there was no cyst...or sign of one. My tubes looked ok from what she could tell, but the pain of pressure inside my uterus on that side was absolutely horrible.

So she took blood, and (I trust this doctor, by the way she seems really terrific) explained to me, calmly, that I seem very much to have PID.
OK so here is where I am now.

Had a shot that day in the gyno's office (thursday evening), and took the two pill dose of Azithromycin. I started the doxycyclie the next day. It is now saturday evening, and I haev the following symptoms/improvements....

Improved: the pain in my vaginal area seems to have gone down, and I don't seem to have the pain in my pubic bone area. (I've been laying down, a lot)

Symptoms remainig (the same):
had mucus, (used to be sort of brown streaky, and clotty, now its pink/red streaks).
had a slight temp at the docs (99.8 ), still have one, although it's slightly higher...at 100.4.

Symptoms (new):
some slight cramping in my lower back and sides (very slight, like I'm going to start my period soon or something, but I had my period a week and a half ago, maybe a bit longer), I am not tender to the touch.
Nausea and diahrea, some feeling of gas in my intestines.

I know none of you are doctors, but I was hoping someone has had some advice, as to whether or not the 2nd day in I should be like this, or what.

That sounds awful Sad i know how you feel though it's been 3 months since i had PID it's gone now.. I had it through an unknown bacteria.. Initially i had a untreated urine infection so that maybe the reason it got into my womb. It's scary to think what damage it has caused though because within these months i still had pain on and off not as bad but still there and prevented me from doing normal everyday things.. I think sometimes it leaves scars inside particularly if you've had the infection for a while.. the thing that frightens me the most is having my Fallopian tubes blocked and never being able to have children.. Which would be really devastating for the future. But hey don't worry just take the antibiotics don't stop (one of my big mistakes why i left it too long) it takes time to heal you'll still have the pain but it's better the infection goes before it causes more damage. However defo get the symptoms checked out with the doctor so you can confirm the antibiotics are working.. Maybe the doc can alter your antibiotics? Did they find anything through the smear tests? I had a lot of similar symptoms to you when i had PID whilst taking the antibiotics.. I don't know if that helps at all? I really do hope u get better soon though it is a horrible thing to have. Take care x

I've been reading your posts and it REALLY bothers me that you continue to have unprotected sex with your idiot boyfriend who refuses to take antibiotics to clear up his STDS. His moronic excuse of "it kills good bacteria as well" is COMPLETELY PATHETIC.

I mean, yeah- antibiotics kills good bacteria as well as bad for a week, and what? He'd rather continue to carry an STD and reinfect you and anyone else he comes in contact with in future? Do you realise that, not only is he jeopradises his health - he is making you (or has ALREADY made you) infertile? You say you have chronic pain from PID? Maybe because you are continuely having sex with this idiot, and without a condom and being reinfected everytime? Are you that silly?

Maybe you don't want children in future, but by the sounds of it- you are TOO young to know. Do you know that PID is the LEADING CAUSE OF INFERTILITY! Google "PID Adhesions" and see what pictures come up. That's most likely what your organs look like. Adhesions are scar tissue. Scar tissue is what causes the pain. Not only does it block your fallopian tubes, rendering you infertile- the scars themselves can wrap around and stick with other organs causing pressure and chronic pain. Which is what your having. Does your idiot boyfriend care about that?

I'm sorry if this all sounds rude, but, someone has GOT to tell you! You and your boyfriend MUST take antibiotics at the same time and use protection until than. It's that simple. You should dump him, you can't be that desperate to stay with this imbecile unless you are one too? Ugh!

^^ I agree too.. I mean girl your man needs to fix up!! Unless you aren't planning to have children in the future but the pain of PID is awful to deal with i would never risk it. Me and my partner didn't have sex for at least a month whilst i was on antibiotics because i still had pain after the course had finished.. Always used condoms when having sex anyway but still didn't want to risk it. I'd wait for the infection to totally be cleared up before continuing to have sex again.. Some boys make me angry obviously if they can see their partner in pain they should understand.. My man would of been long gone if he was like that but I'm lucky he understands me and he'd rather me be pain free before we started again (btw we have never had unprotected sex) any infections you get you have to handle with A LOT of caution because it can just spread and spread and cause more problems to your organs making you more ill.. I mean i cannot believe i got a womb infection from a simple bladder infection left untreated.. but their you go.. anything is possible & if you know what infection you have both of u need treatment as soon as poss! Having unprotected sex is the worse thing you can do when having an infection :/ i can't even imagine.

pid post
Aww i hope it goes soon! I'm sure it will. I get pains now & then but had a blood test found nothing & a ultrasound... it's subsided now but at least twice a week i get it for a few hrs.. It's not sooo bad it's similar to neuro pain v.sudden. It is quite annoying. & It's good that your doing everything you can to keep your body healthy.. I tried with different fruits blueberries are really good too & blackcurrent juice.. I can't eat certain foods cause the pain sometimes kick in. When i had PID i remember i couldn't eat garlic bread or spicy foods it used to play up! Strange how now i don't have that. Yeah i also had it in my left side, sometimes get it there now and then but nothing too major. That sucks your partner should of took it all & not risked it! But the pain sometimes just stays there for a while i think because your body gets used to it.. Weird thing is when i had sex with my partner it didn't hurt when i had pid. Strange eh? The doctors never found anything wrong with his tests or mine.. No bacteria was found through our swabs just my blood test indicated an infection. It is strange what your body can do at times.. but guess it was just fate and i had left a UTI untreated for too long.. I think in your case you wait till both your medications are over then start having sex again just in case it hasn't healed properly. I did whilst i was taking antibiotics... Aw i know it is nice to help people going through similar situations Smile How are you feeling now? Any better?

This is a follow up
I was again put on medication flagy twice a day for seven days and doxycycline for 14 days twice a day after rushed to the ER and was treated with IV antibiotics. im taking probiotics not to get yeast inf, . Flagyl makes me sick, due to many side effects and glad i need to take it for seven days only. Pain has subsided but i notice that there are times for a weird cramping and a mild pain on my lower left abdomen especially in the afternoon or if im doing something and it makes me feel im running after my breath. Combined with chills and perspiration that will eventually go away after few minutes or hours, . Im now on the 4th day of antibiotics, I hope the cramping and mild pain goes away totally before finishing my antibiotics. My gyno advised me to come back after finishing the meds when pain is still occuring. Because of what happened, I would never have sex again for a while, i would never have sex wiithout protection or washing first in the future I wanna return to my normal life where I can do activities, because ive been so depressed a long time. Its ok not to have sex as long as I would feel okay even if it takes decades of no sex. This really changed my life and i miss my normal life and i dont wanna pay doctors anymore because i already have drained my wallet.Im done with having kids since i already have two, but its the pain I wanna get rid of. Im scared that there may be reason why it aches at times not just the scarring because if its a scar , pain should be consistent, i suspect a dormant bacteria and i really really wanna get rid of them. , i envy other women who didnt suffer PID and women who were able to get rid of it. I feel ashamed to my family I cant tell them, Im suffering without them knowing, it has made me irritable to simple things, confused if I would still have a bright future awaiting. I already told my bf we cant have sex anymore coz I wanna get over it and move on with my life. He understood my feelings and Im glad there are people who are supportive in the forums. ... I will stay positive about this. i will get rid of this and I will do everything to get over this.
