Q: Liver Cysts - Pressure Under Rib Cage
asked by: cmastorio on September 28th, 2007

I recently had some CAT scans done for my bladder and kidneys and they found one cyst on my liver and the other one was too small to characterize, one on the right side, and one in the dome of the right side.

I have an appt. at the end of the month to get it checked. A couple of weeks ago I started getting a strange feeling of pressure underneath my right rib cage. It feels like something heavy is sitting on top of my ribs, then that went away and I had a very mild dull pain.

The pain never came back, but I still have the pressure once in a while. It goes away for days and then comes back.

What can this mean?

Thanks.

Hi!
Do you know why were Ct scans for your kidneys and bladder done?
How old are you? Are you having chronic high blood pressure and frequent urinary infection? Do you feel flank pain? Are your prone to form kidney stones?
If your are experiencing these, probably you're suspected for polycystic kidney disease and half of the people suffering from this condition are having cysts on their liver, too, including infections of liver cysts.
Cysts can be present because of several other reasons.
Echinococcus or dog tapeworm can cause circular cyst and multiple smaller cysts throughout the liver.
Cyst on liver can be, also, an amebic liver abscess(a collection of pus) caused by the intestinal parasite Entamoeba histolytica.
It could be primary tumor(benign or malignant) or metastases.
I'm sure that the feeling of pressure underneath the right rib cage is caused by this cyst
Can you, please, think of some other symptoms that you may experiencing before!
Waiting for your post!
Best wishes!

Liver Cysts
Thanks for replying. I have a history of chronic cystitis and bladder infections, that is why my urologist sent me for the CAT scans. As far as the parasite from dogs, I have two dogs, How would you contract something like that?

The only thing I don't understand about the pressure under my rib cage is that it will go away for days and then comes back out of nowhere. Also, if this cyst was only 0.3 cm when I had the CAT scan done over a month ago, would it cause that pressure if it is so small?

Thanks!

Liver Cysts
Sorry, I didn't reply to the rest of your questions. I am 40 years old and I do not have a history of any kidney stones and do not have any flank pain.

I had a kidney infection once about 5 years ago.

Thanks.

The domestic dog is a definitive hosts for E. granulosus and may have thousands of adult tapeworms without being symptomatic.
People usually become infected by accidentally swallowing the tapeworm eggs passed in dog faeces( hand-to-mouth transfer of tapeworm eggs) Some gravid proglottides may stay around the anus of the dog, contaminating its fur with eggs. The eggs travel through the bloodstream, lodge in organs and form watery cysts full of tapeworm heads. This is known as hydatid disease or echinococcosis. Most common place where these cysts are formed is liver.
Clinical presentation is often non-specific and many patients may be asymptomatic.
Have you experienced some other symptoms, such as: diarrhea, swollen abdomen, stomach upset, unexplained weight loss, weakness, cough, jaundice?

Best wishes!

Liver Cysts
I really haven't experienced any of those symptoms except for being tired alot, but I think that is just from being a busy person. As far as contracting something like that, I always wash my hands after I clean up after the dog, unless you could get something like that from bathing the dog.

I don't know. I go to the doctor next week, so we will see what happens.

Thanks alot.

Hi!
Please, be sure not to forget to mention to your doctor that you're feeling very tired.
Did you already have liver function tests?
I guess next week you'll have an ultrasound and, probably, liver biopsy.
I'll think of you and I hope this will end well.
Waiting for your post!
Best wishes!
