Q: Weird Periods

soo yeah...my periods are weird. first of all, they come whenever the hell they want. also, they last however long they want and then just when i think it's safe to stop wasting pads/pantiliners cuz nothing is coming out anymore, it restarts.. this makes me really mad. also, is it normal for it to have a really weird consistency at first? cuz when my period starts at first it doesn't look like blood at all. its more like a brown goop. and whats really annoying is that the blood that does come out is really thick so instead of seeping through the little holes in the top layer of my pad, it just kinda coats them and clogs them so i have to change my pad right away. and one more thing...i've yet to have a period where i don't leak in my sleep! i already use the longest pads available. but no matter how far up or how far down in my underwear i place them, i always leak. i think it's cuz the blood just completely bypasses the pad and kinda flows down my buttcrack or something and ends up staining my clothes in areas where the blood shouldn't even be. this sounds funny but it's really not. i cry sometimes. any tips/help you can offer on any of this?

Weird Periods
Hi Maji,

I dont know how old you are but if you are very young and this is the start of your menstruation, periods do some weird things like this. Similarly, if you are nearing the menopause, the same thing happens!

I had this problem and it was all due to stress. I had my FSH/LH levels checked by my doctor (which were fine). I think it would be a good idea if you did the same thing just to check what is happening. Good luck. Let me know how you get on. hugs

It's very normal for your period to have different consistencies! Brown and slimy, red and liquidy, slimy, blackish, it's all normal. My periods come whenever they want to as well, though thankfully they're normally short, 3-4 days.

I noticed you didn't mention tampons... have you tried using those in conjunction with pads?

For the heavy period over night, try using an extra-absorbent tampon AND a pad. That should prevent leaking. Yes, you can wear tampons over night.

I've considered that tampons would probably be more protective than pads, but i really don't think that's an option for me. I've never stuck anything in my vagina ever. A few times I've tried to insert a tampon in but it never goes anywhere. I've looked down there with a mirror a few times and I don't even see an opening. I've tried looking down there when I'm on my period so that maybe the blood flow will show me where it's coming from, but it doesn't work because the blood is just smeared around everywhere so idk the source of it. i hope i have a vagina haha...or not haha....idek if this is funny or not.

I stuck a tampon in my vagina on my very first period ever, and it wasn't even a slim-fit sized one!

It's way, WAY easier to do it while on your period. Of course you have a vagina, if you didn't, where is the blood coming from?

You really should experiment in the bathtub some night and feel around gently to find your entrance. It's pretty important to know where it is! You WON'T see an opening even with a mirror.

Insert your fingers first, when you're not on your period. Find out where your vaginal entrance his, how big it can get, and how deep you can go it.

Go buy SlimFits tampons, they're skinnier than normal ones. They're more like the size of one finger.

Trust me, if I could stick a full-sized tampon up there without ever having put anything up there on my first period, you can do it now!

Tampons are wonderful, I'd try what Eiri suggested.

I have tried to put them on both on and off my period.
i get tired of trying and it starts getting a bit dry down there after a while so i stop trying. and i cant stick my fingers in either (my bf has tried too). im thinking i probably have a large hymen or something.

I might mention that to my gyno- she can check for your hymen and if it's going to be really tough to break she might be able to break it for you. I'd keep trying to get your fingers (gently) in there.

It's not necessarily unnecessary, lol. It may have served as protection of some kind in the past. Nowadays it seems pretty vestigal, kind of like the appendix.
