Q: Sick Baby..

Ethan is really sick. He has really bad diarrhea and a little bit of a fever. His poop smells absolutely disgusting. I don't think it's normal. I feel so bad for him because he is getting horrible diaper rash from all the pooping. He screams every time I clean him off. He is playing in the bath right now. (don't worry, there is someone watching him) I probably won't get any sleep tonight Sad Haha, I'm used to it.

He is still drinking his milk, but not nearly as much. I tried to give him pedialyte, but he didn't like it at all. Hopefully he will keep drinking the milk, but if not I'll take him to the doctor.

I honestly don't know how he could even poop that much, he literally pooped almost every 1/2 hour all day long. I feel so bad for him.

Poor Ethan! Sad

I'm not sure if i'm right or not, But i think I remember someone telling me (my mom possibly) to not give a baby milk if they have diarrhea because it makes it worse.

Anyways, I really hope he gets better, does ethan like popsicles? If he does i'd go buy the pedialite frozen pops, Brayden didn't like liquid pedialite either but the ice pops really worked well when he's sick.

Love you guys!

Hi,

My kids just got over that same thing, ours lasted 24 hours, but I'm wondering if maybe Ethan has rotovirus. You mentioned that the smell is really bad, so that's what caused me to remember that illness.

Also, my kids Dr. said to avoid milk and other dairy, and just feed my kids the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) and to avoid diaper wipes because it can really burn their little tushes.

I hope he starts feeling better soon, but you might consider taking in a poopy diaper to have checked for rotovirus just to be on the safe side.

Good luck,

Christina

Aw poor little man! Diaper rash is nasty. Do you have a good cream you can put on it? I used a few but the only one that worked for jays sore butt was one called "zinc and castor cream". Like someone already said, dont use wet wipes on him, warm water with some baby soap and cotton wool is a lot better for the skin. Wipes will aggravate it more. Hope he gets better soon!

Well, I know you shouldn't really give babies milk when they have diarrhea, but it is pretty much the only thing he will drink. I am starting to worry about him because he isn't peeing very much. He woke up at a little before 5 am with a nasty diaper so I changed him and gave him some milk. Well it was about 9 when he woke up again and I had to change another poop, but he hadn't peed at all. Ugh, he pooped again already. Sad poor baby!

Awww!! Poor Ethan!!! I hope ALex doesn't catch it.

D's right, milk is a no no. see if he'll drink plain cold water. Oni loves water.

As far as the BRAT diet, I would stay AWAY from it. My nephew JUST got a severe intestional blockage from it. He had the SAME thing Ethan has. and his butt got burned SOOOO bad!

His Dr put him on immodium to slow the diarrhea along with the BRAT diet(which BLOWS! lol!)

If he's not peeing, DEFINATELY call his Dr. They'll prob put him on the BRAT diet, but make sure you UP the applesauce part of the diet. And use REAL bananas, not baby food.

And the pedialite popsickles are a GREAT idea! I'm sure he'll LOVE them!!

Hannah just got over this too. It lastted about 10 days. Then she was better for a week, and now she has diarrhea again! Urrgh It's so disgusting! The worst part was that until last weekend, my washing machine was not working. I tried to give her pedialyte, but she too didn't think much of it. I finally got a tube of Lanolin and covered her tush with it at every diaper change. It did a good job of providing a barrier. I figured if it's good for cracked nippies, it must be good for butts!

Yeah Sam, seriously try to pedialite popsicles like Sarah and I said.

Brayden seriously loves those, he was really sick for a few days and wasn't hardly peeing at all, and the doctor said if I can't rehydrate him then I had to bring him to the E.R to get an I.V. Those popsicles saved our lives.

LOL!

Poor Ethan Sad

How long has he been sick for? Has he vomited?
When was the last time he urinated? More than 12 hours? If so, i would definitely bring him to the hospital.

Jordan was really sick when he was 2, and we had to bring him to the hospital to get an IV. Bad experience with the nurses and doctor, but it helped him sooo much!

Let us know what happens.

This is only the second day that he has been sick. He did vomit once last night, but that's it. It's been about 10 1/2 hours, that I know of, since he last peed. I could be wrong, it's hard to tell when there is diarrhea in his diaper. His diarrhea actually doesn't seem as bad today, but he isn't really drinking anything.

I weighed him earlier and he has lost almost a pound since his 15 months appointment . I don't know if that is from being sick though.

his weight loss is prob from him not wanting to eat much and pooping tons.

you're right, it's hard to tell if he's peeing when the poop is like water. poor bebe!!

I hope he get's better soon!!

Maybe you could dump some rice cereal into his cup of milk if he won't drink any water.
Also, try gatorade. it has sugar, but it also has electrolytes. Try letting him drink it from the gatorade bottle. It might make him WANT to drink it...ya know? And get like the blue kind...something he'll think is cool!

I hope this helps you a lil bit! I hate hearing about sick babies! But there IS something going around!!

Can Babies Have Diluted Gator Aid Or Power Aid?
Its been ages 24 years since my daughter, but when she was little, I use to give her this when she had the diahrrhea. Back then there was no pedialyte. Also, if you can get him to drink bottled water with a little added tea...I know giving a baby tea... but there is something in tea that sooths and relieves diarrhea. Pat his little bottom with corn starch or baby powder to keep him comfortable after cleaning.. Wish I were there to help you. Bless his little heart. I know he's miserable and it makes us feel so helpless when we can't do anthing. L little sugar added to water...I know this sounds bad but if he drinks it and it keeps him hydrated, this is only for a short time..................Keep up informed.........HUGS

My kids were sick like that a few weeks back, lots of diarhea and joseph was throwing up like once a day for 4 days. They get like instant diaper rash with that too wich really sucks. joseph had rotavirus before and he wouldnt keep anything down for 3 days so we went to the drs and they sent us straight to the hospital to get him IV fluids. So id make sure that ifit continues to bring him to the ER.
