Q: Bad Bite After Giving Birth

I had my baby in March of this year. I remember having a lot of jaw/mouth pain the day after, more so than pain from giving birth! It eventually got better, but ever since that day, my bite is completely off. My teeth only touch on one molar in the back. I went from having a perfectly normal bite and no teeth problems to not even being able to bite through anything with my front teeth. I even have a slight lisp every now and then. I had only been to my dentist once before being pregnant (I'm new in the town) so he doesn't have much in dental records of me before. (I'm planning on getting my childhood dentist to send copies of my records.) I am working with him now on getting the bite fixed. We consulted yesterday and the plan was to get braces. I'm just not sure this is the right answer. How can I go from being fine to needing braces in one day? I can't explain what happened. Nothing was abnormal about my delivery so there should be nothing wrong. My dentist says he has never seen anything like this before. I cannot eat very well now, so something needs to be done, but I would like to find some other opinions. Any suggestions on where I should start?

Hi Hi,
I'm cindy. Gee that is weird. I have a question for you tho? was your pregancy normal, did they put any type of a tube down or in your mouth??????? reason i ask is that i knew a lady that had a traumatic pregnancy.... so she was rushed into intensive care and they put tubes down her throat, and i guess from what i was told is the tubes being there kept her jaw open and injured her jaw. So there she was like you with a baby a brand new baby and this horrible tmj!!! anything like that? or was it so painful, did you clench down and maybe injure your jaw? what do you think? have any gut feelings on how it could have happened? cindy

I had a very "normal" delivery. It was very fast. 9 hours total for 1st time baby. I didn't have anything down my throat. The only thing that I can guess is that I clenched my jaw when I was pushing, but I only pushed for about 15 minutes total, so it wasn't really long enough to do extensive damage imo, but maybe it was. Who knows.

I have no pain in my jaw now or anything else really - no popooing sounds or anything like that. Just misaligned with a bad bite.

Hi MommyGin,
I have to side with you about the braces. I can't say you have TMJ but something was thrown off. You might want to consider having physical therapy done for your neck and jaw OR go to a good cranio-sacral massage therapy (for at least a few weeks). I also think you might want to consider going to a different dentist. It can be quite difficult and frustrating to find a really good dentist.

I hope and pray that you find the help you need. And CONGRATULATIONS first-time mommy! Try and keep your stress level down as much as possible for a new mother. Smile

God bless you and the baby,
Carol

TMJ Causes
If you study what most believe to be the origin of most TMJ symptoms... The Jaw Joint / TemporoMandibular Joint... ie..TMJ or TMD, the actual term for the dysfunction of the joint, you will undstand one of the most common causes of the dysfunction is the disc in the joint has become misplaced. The disc the jaw rides on to keep proper distance between the jawbone and the nerve and blood vessels that run right behind it. So just like holding a small silicone disc between your fingers and squeezing hard until it pops out... sometimes extreme or sudden abnormal pressure can cause the disc to misplace... sometimes instantly bringing on previously unexperienced ills.... so the fact that you had a child... and maybe clenched your jaw with more pressure than normal... and held it for a period of time... maybe the time of a contraction... repeatedly... could be the reason your jaw muscles were so sore the next day, why your disc may be displaced and the cause of your symptoms. Braces will straighten your teeth, but unless they know where to position your jaw to recapture the disc it won't fix the problem. It is an interesting area of study... best part is it seems to require no drugs to correct... just properly trained providers... and sadly there are multiple ways this is treated... some far less successful than others.
