Q: has anyone had any luck with TMJ treatments ?

Hi Everyone,

I have read a number of the TMJ postings here and I feel for everyone's pain. My girlfriend has been dealing with TMJ for the past year and I hate seeing her go through all this pain. She's been to a TMJ doctor, been to Chinese doctors for herbs, currently going to an acupuncturist to see if it might resolve her problem and is considering getting botox because it's been known to relieve TMJ pain for 3-4 months.

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone here has had any luck with TMJ treatments. Are there any current recommendations anyone here could make? It's hard seeing someone you love go through so much pain and suffering when there isn't a true "cure" for this debilitating condition.

Thanks!

OH YES, thank God, but for me it took a lot of time and frustration, sadly. Whereas, there might not be a "cure" for your girlfriend, depending on how long and how much damage there is, she can be helped, I believe. One of the most important things to do is find a good TMJ dentist. This is the frustrating part usually.

I do advocate bite splints but frequently other treatments must be done at the same time (PT, MT, medications, ultrasound, TENS, posture correction, etc.) You could be one of her best "doctors" by learning the basics of trigger point massage and doing this on her every day, tho, this is usually just a band-aid, not a cure. Frequently it takes many band-aids to control TMJ.

I hope and pray that she can find the help she needs. Research and learning all you/she can about TMJ. It will help when trying to find what treatment(s) will work. Trial and error is common with TMJers; sadly. Please, just love her. I know that as the person not experiencing the pain, you can't really know all she is going thru, but I can guarantee you it is a nightmare. Support can be a big band-aid in itself.

God bless you both,
Carol

Carol,

Thanks for the kind words. Support is a huge part of it. We've had our struggles and frustrations with this. It's very difficult seeing her go through this because I can't fathom how painful the condition is.

She's been doing research for the past year, has the book "Taking Control of TMJ" and has tried the exercises in the book. She's currently seeing a TMJ doc in Beverly Hills who provided her a splint that she wears daily and she's hooked up to a TENS machine when she's there for treatment. I've been doing alot of research myself and this TMJ forum is a great knowledge base which helps connect other people dealing with TMJ.

Thanks.
