I just got a similar thing in the past couple of days that many of you have described (especially RDPHILLY). I ride mountain bikes a lot and thought that maybe somehow that caused it. It is really uncomfortable. If it continues to get worse, I will go to the doctor in a couple of days and post any information.

Well i have this problem as well.
It is not red or swollen but you can feel it there.
Seems to be the size of a peanut as previously described.
1 thing i have noticed with mine is that it seems to have a 'tail'. The main lump is aprox 1 inch from my anus and there is what appears to be a raised line running from the lump to my anus. I have concerns that is is a worm of sorts.
It doesnt leak at all and is not getting any bigger. I have had it for about a month. It is very very itchy and the more i scratch the more it itches to the point it gets sore.
To continue with the theory it could be a worm of sorts, i take very very hot showers and after a few minutes it seems to receed back into my skin.
The is a post that mentions pilots get it and someone mentioned they ride a push bike a lot.
I think the common factor there is sitting for long periods of a time. I work in an office and am sitting for 50 hours a week. Could this be the cause?
Also i am a person that likes some anal action during sex with my wife so i am thinking this could also have caused it with penetration of a dildo as to reduce any pain it is best to push. The bigger the object being inserted the more one would push out.
This could explain a burst blood vessell.

Well i think the only solution is to see a doctor.
Good luck to all.

sebaceous cyst/ butt bump
I just had mine drained by my gyno yesterday. Everyone here, just go to your gyno if you're a girl or a dermatologist if you are a girl/guy. Doctors have seen all sorts of things, a cyst near your butt, no matter how embarrassing it feels to you, isn't the worst thing they've seen. I had a hard peanut sized ball on my left butt area/vaginal area for many years. the doctor just injected me with a numbing substance that pricked and hurt a lot. then, she lanced it and drained it for a long time (3-5 minutes). She said she wanted to make sure that she was able to get the "pocket" out of my skin and was surprised by how much it drained. i am still recovering from it, but i am glad i got it taken care of. the gyno even showed my what she lanced. it looked like a lot of harden puss, similar to what comes out when you pop a huge pimple. i wouldn't recommend doing it yourself because of the infections that may come from not being able to drain it all the way.

Soft bump around anal ring
I have a small, soft bump right outside the ring of my anus. It is very tender, feeling more like a wrinkle than a bump. It is about the size of a large grain of rice, and it trails to the anus. I had experienced very slight bleeding while wiping for several weeks, but it was so minor, I did not making a big deal about it, and figured it was because of my excessive wiping. Soon after experiencing NO MORE bleeding, whatsoever, I started to feel the soft wrinkle forming. I figured it was just a common pimple, but it has been 3 weeks now and it seems to be growing very slowly, or even staying the same size. It does not hurt, and looks normal. I can't tell it's there (holding a mirror underneath), but I can easily feel it with my finger. I don't do any anal play during sex, but I think that the excessive wiping, stress and the straining may have something to do with this issue. I will see my doctor and report back. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

help
i'm experiencing this same similar problem for a good few years. one or two bumps will appear near the tip top part of my butt cheak. both left and right cheak. somtimes it does be like a small or big button and sometimes again it does be like a real hard big bump which is too hard to even think about bursing and it hurts alot when it gets that big. after a while puss will just come out from it and the swelling will go down and somtimes again, if it's small it will just go down by itself. i have no idea why it does happen. i wish dat it could stop happening. i came looking for a answer to my questions but only seeing people who having the same problem. could a doctor or somebody with knowledge of this to come and say the reason for this and most of all... how to stop it from happening! please!

Hey I'm a little embarrased to talk about this but yesterday I noticed a very hard peas sized boil between my two cheeks close to the anal opening that is tender to the touch and have been doing a little research, but im still a little confused. If it is hard like a boil, will it just go away? Can I drain the blood myself? If so, should I keep it very clean and sterilized and what should I use to do this? If no, then should I have to go see a doctor? It has only been about a day or two, but other people are describing it as a sore, not a boil. I play hockey and was in the wait room the other day so maybe I overdid it a little and that's what caused this discomfort. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am only 16 and would need to tell my parents about this to go see a docter or drain the blood---talk about embarrassing!

Painful cyst like lump near butt hole.
I have the same thing, or roughly around the same thing.
I first noticed it about a year ago now. I put it off for about 6 months due to work, but towards the end of my fire season it was just becoming too much. I couldn''t walk up the mountain anymore with my gear it hurt to much, The lump was to the size that it rubbed with every step i took. I couldn''t sit, i was sitting on a slant each time so i wouldn''t hit it with a stick or sit on it the wrong way.
Hot baths seem to help at the time, but doesn''t last long.Another thing i have noticed with this lump is it will start off very small an with in a day or two it''s the size of a pog! Not a pleasant feeling in that area at all! It also seems to move or grow i guess. If you touch it, It''s hard with a liquid feeling surrounding it, Also you can feel like lines or something with in it. It''s VERY VERY painful and very embarrassing. With these bumps showing up each time i seem to bleed with them, I get alot of pain both in the back anal area (like glass shredding or sharp knife pains) then again in the front where my ovaries are. The pains are enough to drop me to my knees if standing. Are these both tied together? Or two different problems all together.
I know i do have to go see a doctor about them, i just have to work up my courage enough to do so. But in the meantime if anyone has any kind of information that can be useful it would be really appreciated.
Colors- A puple
size- right now about the size of a 2 dollar coin.
Touch- Hard with a soft surrounding
Area-started on the inner cheek, Now with growth, It is from the line crack right to the cheek surface of sitting.
Feeling- VERY painful. Can''t sleep in fear of the hubby hitting it, Or rolling over the wrong way.Pains will come up my anal area an spread to lower back.

I went to the doctor about this the day after i posted it. Today i am in bed waiting to heal.. Im not sure if i had the same as everyone else here...But it's something you really need to go get checked by your doctor. For me i went in for a day surgery, (mine grew over night to the size of a ball...)Yes it is painful, but helpful.. For me they said it was a Bowel cyst? Now my precautions are that if it doesn't heal proper or if it's still leaking or draining in a week from now, that i may need another surgery for them to go in an check my bowels.. This wont be pleasant. so i suggest to everyone else, Dont waste the time waiting for a reply here.. make an apt. If not it could cause you longer term damage an problems.

If u are lump was anything like mine, yo ucan expect to be bed ridden for 2-7 days.. and be off work for a month. Not fun, but worth it if it saves me any further surgery or problems.

Hi, I have dont htink i have a lump where my issue is, its acutally between my anus and scrotum, Its very tender feels raw, and it does smell quite bad. It is embarresing yes, but hey guess ill never meet anyone on her in real life (i REALLY hope) but anyways I do have a lump up the top of my butt cheeks however i seen a doctor about that, It was firstly a hole above my anus... what i was told (mass wrong spelling here) is it is a thing called polynidal sinus, its basically happens a lot in hairy sweaty men, around the anus... the hairs get infected and ingrown basically tearing up the skin around the area. I put it down to sitting on your bum too much can make in come along. anyways I had that about 10 years ago and that was quite horrible, it went purple a sickly green and yuk yuk yuk. doctors gave me some stuff to swab on it which cleared it up mostly., such as the hole closed over and the foul colours and discharge was gone. However it seems to have scarred and can be painful at times. My current issue has me a little stumped as it doesnt quite seem the same but i think it may be possibly related. Anyways Thanks to everyone for their post of concerns and the resolutions offered. Thought I would post my knowledge on this and also see if anyone has simular symptoms to what I have and ideas how to fix.

mine is a rawness thats a pus sweaty substance between my anus and scrotum. Very sore and smells horrid, Very embarrising shower deodorant everything cannot kill this horror!

please help!!!
i have a similar lump around my anus, but its been there for years but in the last few months its gotten bigger Sad its not sore and as far as i'm aware hasn't leaked anything! it kind of looks like a lump on top of a lump with some extra skin thrown in for good measure!!yuk! if i've had a dodgy tummy and maybe some weird bowel movements its seems to bulge more from inside, and then settles back in when things have calmed down... i kno i should go see someone but i'm so scared they're gonna tell me its cancer and that i've left it too long Sad

Some pointers and general advice
I tripped over this thread looking up this subject for myself, not seeking a free cod-science internet diagnosis but to see if any helpful symptom management techniques were available.

I'm sorry that so many of you seem terrified of going to the Dr either for fear, embarrassment or financial reasons. I work as a health professional in the UK and know a LITTLE bit about this stuff.

Some of you are clearly describing the symptoms of Pilonidal Sinus, some piles or Hemorrhoids both internal and external and some of you mention symptoms that are a little more alarming.

Firstly, to dispell any massive worries and this is not absolutely factual but a good-ish rule of thumb is that if it hurts it's not likely to be cancer. Cancer is a silent disease in a lot of cases otherwise people would go and get it sorted earlier in most cases. Any significant and extended bowel habit changes and extended bleeding does need a medical practitioner to intervene, if only to reassure you. Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when caught at the right time.

Piles are treatable via suppositories which can be bought over the counter. As so many of you don't want to go to the doctor, a lot of the treatments are available over the counter without prescription (1 in 2 people gets piles and apart from pregnant women, about 1 in a million ever discuss it - so you are not alone!!). Certainly you can also rupture a little vein under the skin without even noticably hurting the area and end up with a firm blood blister (which hurts a lot) but generally suppositories won't do you any harm!! If anything the worst to expect is no benefit (and it's worth the gamble). Ask your pharmacist for an over the counter treatment (Google it and ask for it by name and then they won't even ask you any questions as they'll presume you are a 'seasoned sufferer' and trust you know what to do!! Oh and consider a bit of lube whilst you are embarrassing yourself in the pharmacy as a few of the suppositories are made up of a clay like base and they are dry (so not nice if you are really sore there).

If the mass is on a buttock or your natal cleft (that is the nice name for the space between your cheeks) then it is very likely you have the synus I mentioned above (especially if you are expressing pus).Pilonidal Sinus's are more common in men and are experienced by people who either have a fair amount of hair in their natal cleft (and one ingrows often) or sit a lot and put pressure on a point which has a spot/hair trying to grow out so long-distance drivers etc see it more. Such synus's can be chronic or acute but you really can get them resolved and you will wonder why you never did before. If it causes you so much pain and embarrassment in your personal life, why would you imagine that a quick trip to the dr and a minor procedure (if necessary) would cause you more difficulties? Come on guys, some of you sound like you've been in pain for ages!! It really is not a big thing for healthcare professionals and, so long as you wash well, nothing to be ashamed of (My goodness you'd be amazed the state some people turn up in when they can wash and just expect to be dealt with like it's fine to smell..).

Another one some of you may be talking about is a Bartholin's abscess or cyst on the external labia. Usually not a big problem but again very treatable!!

I can only urge you all to consider thinking about medical input. Please remember that we health care professionals are also human and empathise with patients presenting as nervous or ashamed (when they dont need to be).

But, basic things to know for you ALL:

A Cotton Underwear and loose!!

B Very careful hygiene and only the most gentle and unscented of soaps etc!! Go for baby products and the more 'medical' the better. As people worried about that area tend to over compensate - you may be aggrevating the cause.

C Over the Counter treatments for piles (not for you all with bumps more than an inch away from your anus) - try it! What can go wrong? Ok you have to push something up your bottom but its not a baseball bat (these things are not a cemtimeter in diameter and 3 cms long). The pharmacist won't shout your order across the shop!!

D Moisten toilet tissue with warm water when cleaning to reduce friction!

But, most of all guys, go see a professional - you are very likely to thank me for that bit of advice!! Ignoring something often does not make it go away and stress is bad for your health!! Even those of you worried about the big C word - guys it's never too late to check out what has being going on for ages - knowing what it is gives you options - tumors dont grow smaller or faster just because someone diagnoses them!!

Anyway, I popped a suppository about 3 hours ago Smile My ass hurts when I stand up (just whilst standing up not once in standing - that would be alarming!!) and I came to this site for some practical solutions not to preach...

I hope you all think about what I've just told you, it might be the best advice you ever got in your life!!

****i have the same problem and went to see a dermotologist for it.. its called hydradenitis. has something to do wit the sweat glands and bacteria with in the body.. i been taking isotretenion( a pill for nodule acne)prescribed for this specific problem yall are describing. take care of the problem as fast as you can.. it does leave scars. and you do not wnt them

it does not get rid of the problem permanently... nothing does, but it will slow down and decrease the appearence of the lumps

I have a lump on my right buttock. I first noticed it about 2 to 3 years ago. It's never been painful, except maybe for a very occasional dull ache that doesn't last long, and there has been no colour change - it's always been the same colour as the rest of my bottom. At first it was hardly noticeable, except to touch. I did show my very close family (fortunately, or unfortunately, we've always been able to freely discuss all these kinds of issues) - they suggested I go to a doctor. I'd always considered that it was probably some kind of cyst and never been especially worried about it, until recently. This is because the lump has grown since I first noticed it. Initially, because I'd never really paid too much attention to it I dismissed the fact that it had grown and just presumed that it must always have been that size and that I was just imagining things. And also, because I've always been a bit vague about when I first noticed it (as it wasn't something I considered remarkable so didn't make a note of), it was easier to be vague about it getting bigger.
Anyway, at least during the last 6 to 12 months it has got noticeably bigger, to the point where I can't kid myself about it anymore. It feels about the size of a squash ball, hard and still normal colour without pain. It can also easily be seen when I look in the mirror and it can now easily be felt through whatever clothes I have on.
Still not especially worried about it, I went to see my doctor to see if I could get it sorted while I currently have an extended break from work and he had no clue as to what it might be. He seemed a little concerned and has made me a hospital appointment to see a specialist. My appointment is next month. If anyone's interested, I'll let you know what the outcome is. I just found this site by chance and read everyone's posts and felt compelled to let people know that you definitely shouldn't be embarrassed or afraid about going to see a doctor. I'm a healthy, fit and active 30 year old British male. Yes it takes a little bit of courage to go and show your bum to someone you don't know at very close range, but it's dealing with your problem & has to be the better option than worrying about it. It is also within a doctor's job description to see things like this (and much worse), so just take it in your stride and with good humour...trust me, I found it makes things much easier.
