I am glad you made it through your hard time the better for it, Eiri.

A woman of the world? Not quite yet. Chastizing someone about their brother's death is not quite a sensitive and intelligent action.

Your comments are extremely one sided. Why don't you keep them to yourself until you can be more even handed?

For example, why didn't you admonish nightangel for this condescending reply to Eiri's story:

nightangel73 wrote:

Believe me when I say this:

I didn't use drugs, but I did just finish living a season of excess. I cut myself off from my family this past spring and lied a lot. I laid around my house with my friends and boyfriend. I didn't attend class. I ignored calls from my parents. I failed many courses.

I said I was fine. I said I was following my feelings. I WAS NOT HAPPY. It was all a lie.

My behavior was a cry for help to my parents even though I didn't know it. I was spiraling into a mess of self-destruction and I don't know where I'd be right now if my parents had not DEMANDED that I visit them this summer. They saved me from myself. I was about to throw my dreams away to live with a man I didn't even love anymore. I was only dating him - marrying him - because it angered off my parents, and I didn't want them ruling my life.

I am so thankful that they loved me enough to not let me get lost. I was this-close to being gone forever from them and my family. I can't think of anything much more horrible than a family ignoring pleas of help from a child. You might not see direct things, but if you know your child for real, then you will know when you need to step in.

Sometimes, being a good person is NOT letting someone "just do what they want". That's why people have interventions for drugs and alcohol. Because you will never hear the truth from the person who needs help. They will paint a pretty picture, but they're lying.

awww poor soul! Glad you did not got lost eiri. I can't relate with you. I Never have been into the path self-destruction. But knowing how you think I can see why you were going to do what you were going to do. It is sad.

Advice
Lack of communication is the first cause of divorce in america. If you don't communicate effectively you won't be understood. Not in work, not in your marriage, not in your life. So next time eiri if you have a problem say it. Don't need to go into self-destruction, just talk about it. LISTEN, ANALYZE and learn to COMPROMISE. Always look for a happy medium for the situations.

I had been fortunate to have my parents near me almost all my life to watch me over. And so many times I dated guys and my parents having higher insight would tell me what they thought of them, if they seem like they loved me or not. And so many times I thought they were wrong and you know they proved to be right everytime. So advice number 2 - Listen to your parents. They are right.

and btw what was your problem that you wanted to go away from your parents?
[/quote]

One sided? You are praising Eiri's smarts for chastizing someone about their brother's death.

I am on no "side". I say what I think.
---------------------

Actually, I didn't even see that reply from nightangel until now. But now that I have, I don't see the condescencion that you do. She is being honest. She is older than Eiri and is saying what she thinks.
I would disagree that parents are always right, certainly, but I think she was sympathetic to Eiri and giving advice sincerely.

Remember, nightangel's primary language is not English. Sometimes you have to take that into consideration when reading her posts.

I forgot to mention earlier futureshock that I was glad to read that you could not be empathetic to nightangel because you couldn't figure out how she and her family could think it's a choice. Once you learn how her family could think it's a choice (lack of education/religious belief/etc) then you can at least understand where she's coming from, even if you don't agree with it. I completely disagree with her point of view on homosexuals and abortion, but I understand where she is coming from and we can get along.

The problem is that nighangel called me a "poor soul" when it's quite the opposite.

I didn't post any of this for sympathy.

I think someone has missed the point of my posts here, and it wasn't futureshock. Obviously, people are going to interpret them any way they want.

I started talking about empathy but people immediately forgot what empathy is. Empathy isn't just about whoever agrees with you; it's about everyone.

Nightangel's brother died. Some members of this board want to blame her and her family, and even have come right out and said that.

*shakes head*

Ashamed, you ought to be.

When you hit "quote" you will see the person's post exactly as they wrote it. You can see what they put in front of and after words to make them italic, green, etc.

Unfortunately I can't just show you, since the actual writing won't show up, it will just be green or in italics.

Puerto rico has catholisism as its primary religious affliation; Nightangels' family is catholic; the church teaches homosexuality is a sin and abhorrant in the eyes of god so you tell me, Birch, to a homosexual young man this would not be a motivating factor?
it seems to me future isn't the only one making enormous assumptions.

I can see NA's point that drug use is simply stupid and her brother could have made better choices and can sympathize with her families loss; if homosexuality played a part in his death then one should look to the enoromous pressures that young man was under; he was a grey wolf in a white coated world and even you ought to know peer and social pressure often play a part in suicide.

My brother was having a happy life in the US when he died. He was doing whatever he wanted to do which for one was a lot of partying to the point he would miss work and such. He wasn't depressed for being gay I can tell you that for sure.

My family is catholic but not my dad. My dad is agnostic like Birch, he don't believe in the church at all and he is homophobic. Homosexuality is just disgusting to him like it is for so many people with no religion. I too find homosexuality disgusting and it's not because I'm catholic. But mind you I'm friendly with gays and I treat them with respect like it should be.

I will never get why anyone is a homophobe. Why it even matters to anyone not directly involved in the relationshp. My daughter is a homosexual; am I supposed to love her less? not support her? throw her girlfriend out? I really don't care which sex she is with; I care that she is happy, that she knows love, has loved, is loved.
Why does the sex of whom she is with matter?

I know most people who hate the cops are the ones we deal with most often; is it possible the ones how blindly hate homosexuals the most might be still in the closet?

If you quote a post, there's a little box underneath the text box that says "Notify me when a reply is posted"

Just uncheck it.

Uh, you don't think it would have been extremely rude to say to someone, "Oh, um, I see. The reason you think homosexuality is a choice is because you have been brainwashed by your religion while simultaneously being ignorant"?

Besides, that wouldn't get us anywhere. I'd rather keep showing nightnangel the evidence that clearly shows homosexuality is an inborn trait, and have her try to reconcile that with her preconceived notion.

As long as she isn't one of those nitwit ninnys who drive by my daughter and her girlfriend on the street shouting stupid crap about how they'll show her what a good time a real man is I really don't care how homophobic she is.
She doesn't understand homsexuality; I don't understand homosexual bias. So we are even.

It wouldn't of been rude (IMO) if you were sincerely asking her why she felt that way.

I can't get offended if someone doesn't understand me and asks where I am coming from.

Now, if you were telling her why she felt a certain way without having an honest discourse, then that would be a point of irritation (IMHO).

I agree that showing evidence of your beliefs is the best way to go, as well as trying to understand someone's 'side' of the issue.
