Q: One More Question, Lol

Sorry for so many questions, I am learning all I can about this. Confused

I am trying my best to do self help stuff until the NMD gets back into town (Oct 1st). Anyways, I noticed something today that sorta freaks me out. As I have read in a few books, you should try to keep your tongue rested on the roof of your mouth, lips together, and teeth slightly apart to relax the jaw.

Now, if I am sitting down in a chair, hunched over a bit, and slowly look down (in between my knees), I find that my lower jaw automatically closes and my bottom teeth hit my top teeth. Trying to keep the "relaxed" pose is difficult. Also, the movement of my neck or head when I look down is not fluid, it is more of a "bump bump bump", rather then a steady flow of movement.

Anyone else notice this? Now I am starting to realize why I keep my head in place and just move my eyes down rather then my actual neck when I am in front of the computer for example.

this is a good technique(tongue up etc) however you may need to see a chiropractor as well. it is all connected. I dont notice that at all--im doing it in the library and everyone thinks im a dork lol. you may have some imbalances that need some work.

Hi Alex,
If I am "tight," I will experience what you describe. Holding the mouth with the teeth apart and tongue on roof of mouth is very important. You can have your lips slightly apart too. If you find it difficult to keep your mouth in this position, it usually means that you are "tight" and/or your muscles are in spasms. Think about relaxing (the whole body, hot tub works well) and look at your posture. PT and MT are great de-stressors. Good posture is especially important in front of a computer monitor.

Keep doing all the research you can and ask all the questions you want. Knowledge is one of your best aids when it comes to TMJ and getting good treatment. Have all your symptoms and history written all out and take with you to your appointment so you don't forget anything. I would also make a list of any and all questions you can think of and take it with you.

I pray that you will get the help you need. Please keep us informed.

God bless...
Carol
