I didn't even have sex and this occurred. All of a sudden I was itchy and so I rubbed quite hard to get rid of it. Next thing I know, my inner labia (both) are swollen, hard, and red. After panicking when reading through this, I called the emergency line of my gyno and she said since it is both sides, it is not an abscess and will not require surgery as some people mentioned below. Since I caught it right at the beginning, it should only require medication as it is a REALLY bad yeast infection (though there is no discharge). This makes sense as I just finished taking antibiotics and have had a poor diet recently. But, definitely call or set up an appointment with your doctor ASAP.

When I was pregnant this happened to me and toward the end the discharge increased getting ready for birth. So from the friction of wiping it caused irritation and made it swell... The dr told me to take a luke warm bath and soak for 10 mins. Pat the area dry ( no rubbing) then use a cold compress for 15 mins after. If the swelling doesn't go down, keep repeating. But when you go to the bathroom don't wipe you want to pat it dry.

OMG, this happened to me too
A couple of days ago during sex i felt a pinch and then burning in my labia, and it was enough to interrupt intercourse. I looked down and almost fainted because my inner labia had started to swell up and continued to swell. I went to ER and by then it was huge, it was the size of a lemon, no joke. They didn't know what it was and sent me home telling me to come back if it hadn't gone away in a few days.
It's been 4 days and is only somewhat better, the swelling has gone down but it's still swollen enough that it pokes out through the outer labias and it is purple and painful. It hurts like hell to walk and sit in class.
I'm terrified becuase i can't find any info on this and i don't know how long it will take to heal or if this will happen again. I know it's not these things:
it's not an allergic reaction, or a sebacious cyst
please, has this happened to anyone else?

Had the exact same thing. When me and my boyfriend were having sex his willy came out (we were being quite rough, as usual) he went up and I went down. On the inside of my lips on one side there was a lump the size of a malteaser under the skin. Then we stopped and it went down - then we tried again - it came up again and be come really uncomfortable. I'm only 16 by the way. Then I left it and after a few hours it went down but had turned black. It will do down in a few days just leave it Smile

I went to the doctors for this same problem (2days ago, had sex with my bf in the morning and all day was sore and swollen like a balloon of the left labia and its all purple-red!) and she said its like friction burn bruising and gave me ibuProfen and penicilin and just said stay away from sex till it goes down.. it's been like 2days but no change yet and its still swollen and sore. I hope it goes away soon Sad It looks so scary though, huh? I'm so worried.

swollen labia and ciltoris
this happened to me about 11 years ago i was 16.......let me tell you that the doctors telling you to go home and give it a couple of days they are wrong....I went to the er because it hurt to walk and wear pants..Not to mention I was 16 and increidibly scared out of my mind....anyways it was called an absess to your vulva...and its an infection..they actually need to cut it open to release the pressure and get out the infection..My doctor explained it as being kind of like a zit. I stayed two days in the hospital after surgery and was then sent home with meds and told to rest for a week...NO PROBLEMS SINCE

Swollen and hurting...
Ladies, let me be the first to say that you are absolutely correct that finding information about these symptoms is hard, as there can be many reasons why these areas can hurt, swell or get irritated. Why I picked this forum is because I saw Mingofam's reply, and it hit the nail on the head.

I am the husband, and my wife had just started having irritation about 2 days ago. Today however, we are noticing swelling. She visited her PCP and was given a steroid/anti-fungal cream to help with the swelling, and if fungal related would help, but this morning it was too early to tell what it was. It was just a little inflamed and starting to be uncomfortable. To me, it kinda looked like a zit at the back of her vaginal "lips" toward the anus, but on one side more than the other. Tonight however this swelling had increased to the point that it was sticking out further than the rest of her vagina hurting and hard.

We searched forever looking for something that fit her symptoms and did not find anything until we saw the post from Mingofam. Since the swelling was worse, and now to the size of a penny (or marble sized) and hard... and she was having an uncomfortable time sitting, or walking we decided to go to the ER at 12:30am. The ER doctor luckily had seen this before and called it a Bartholin Cyst or Abscess with Cellulitis. My wife was not to the point where the ER would have to lance it, and they recommended against it, as you would want a specialist to do this type of procedure as there are specific medical procedures that should be taken, that a GYN would know more about.

Needless to say, the ER gave a really painful large dose shot of antibiotics, and a script for some more antibiotics and recommended seeing a GYN ASAP. The thought is that the antibiotic may take care of the infection (as this is what it is) and it may go away for now, but if left untreated, it is possible that it will happen again. The way that this cyst was explained is that the nodes that secrete wetness to that area has gotten infected... not from poor hygiene, or anything else... kinda like a clogged pore, or an infected zit. And because this is the organ that produces moisture when aroused it is an GYN procedure if you are wanting it to be done right.

I will write back more after we go to the OBGYN in a few hours... but I did want to make this a placeholder for this information so that others can find it, because we had a hard time searching for this as well, and this is the closest we have gotten and triggered us to go to the ER. At the bottom of this post I am going to pout keywords to help search engines find this information as others look. I hope this information helps others. Oh... and as a side note, the strong shot of anti-biotics they gave her tonight made her throw up within an hour... so be expecting that to happen. I will try to get the name of the shot as well.

Also... from a guys perspective, it looks swollen and swells fast it seems but actually protruding initially is about marble sized. My wife stated though that it felt like it was swollen 4-5 times that size though. The doctor did confirm that the swelling is all around, and inside and will continue to get worse if not treated. The irritation and swelling around the actual sore spot is the infection moving and this is called Cellutitis. I will write later witht he OBGYN findings. I really hope this helps someone out there!!

Bartholin Cyst
Thank you for sharing your information. I am getting better from what was diagnosed by a Naturopath as a Bartholin Cyst. I went yesterday afternoon with the cyst quickly becoming an abscess the size of a small egg. The Naturopath doctor told me that it was good that I came in right away because the swelling can get worse and cause more complications. The treatment she gave me was sitz bath (sitting in clean, warm water) at least three times a day, two kinds of strong homeopathics, vitamin C, and a topical cream mixture of arnica and calendula. Last night I had acute pain that woke me so I took some more advil and homeopathics and went back to bed. By morning, the pain was gone and the abscess was draining pus/blood. The swelling is now only the size of a large grape and the pain is still gone. I started my day with a sitz bath and more of my homeopathics and vitamins. The Naturopath visit and the supplements/homeopathics cost me $160 bucks all told. This is alot for my family but I think it is well worth it considering the I usually get a yeast infection after antibiotics and the lancing option mentioned by others sounded painful. I still go to a traditional doctor as well so I'm not trying to knock conventional medicine. (I use immunizations etc.) I just wanted women to know that there are other options out there. I hope this helps. All the best.

Bartholin gland cyst or cancer?
I had a bartholin gland cyst went to gp then my obgyn he said just a cyst. Operated to drain it BUT DID NOT TEST what came out. Six months later was diagnosed with Grade 3 cancer of the bartholin gland. PLEASE ensure your doctor does not say antibiotics and all will be good. The new specialist who I went to for a THIRD OPINION said that doctors don't think these can turn cancerous but they do. After a third operation to remove the cancerous gland , they found the cancer had spread to the lymp nodes in my groin which were also removed. I had seven weeks of radiotherapy and thanks to my doctor and lots of prayers I am still here.

99.9% of doctors I have seen over the past ten years for various issues have said they had not heard of Bartholin cancer.

I still see the specialist that diagnosed my problem ever year for check ups, very important!!!

Swollen and hurting... Cont...
Ok ladies... that next morning the hard abscess popped, whether it be from the shot of antibiotics, or just from pressure, it drained itself. We went to the GYN and he confirmed that it was not completely what the ER doctor referred as, it was a simple abscess that had become infected. They treat with antibiotics, so in that case the ER Dr did the right thing.

The GYN explained the abscess as a pore or skin irritation that had become infected. The abscess, was the result of the body fighting an infection in that pore. He compared it to a zit, except much worse. The good news is that the procedure that would need to be done for the cyst, does not have to be performed (no lancing and draining - etc) but the bad news is they do not do much for it except treat with antibiotics.

Couples days later the abscess seems better, though still a little sore. My wife still says she would not want to go through that again, if not for anything... the antibiotic shot she was given still stings in the area they gave it to her in... she don't want that again. Other than that, pretty much back to normal.

Hopefully this information helps others, we appreciate you hosting this blog!

inflamed labia minora, warts & yeast infection?
Thank you so much for the info guys.

Finding satisfactory information on an inflamed labia is hard..! I was diagnosed with having warts and given a medication called Aldara to remedy it, but I don't know if the swollen labia is due to a reaction from the antibiotic or an infection from a wart that I had pulled on and out of the lip that is now grossly swollen, burning, hard, dry, tender, itchy, and looks like it's sweating some kind of clear oil; urinating has also become very painful and I have to pee more frequently while I have continual white discharge. The lip has grown to about three to four times it's normal size and I can't sit or close my legs together without hurting because it's that big, and haven't been able to sleep for the past two days because it hurts that much and is that big...! I'm going to urgent care this morning and will continue to update until the issue is resolved. From what jaalzada wrote though, I'm not surprised if it is an infection since only I have one swollen lip and it is the very same lip that a wart had been pulled off of to leave a gaping hole in the lip...! Safe sex, too people because the pain and humiliation is not worth it!

Day three since I've had inflamed labia. Doc thinks it is an infection and not a cyst since a cyst will be more localized and my whole left labia minora is inflamed. He was only the er doc so he is having me report back on Monday. He prescribed me clotrimazole for possible yeast infection and itching, ibuprofen and vicatin for pain, and clindamycin hcl to treat the infection. After one day, symptoms have worsened. Labia is more inflamed with perineum now, too, even more tender, starting to turn a purplish color, and drying on the crest, and I really cant sit except on my tail bone or walk without walking like a duck. Labia is inflamed and tender enough that even walking like a duck will still chafe the labia painfully. Peeing is still painful but I dont have a bladder infection. I have to sleep with a thick pillow between my legs. Vicatin may have helped me to sleep about five hours last night after 48+ hrs no sleep from suffering. I have cold chills as well and when to bed with overcoat and sock hat. As painful as the labia is, I'm trying to stay away from use of pain killers just incase my pain level reaches a 10/10. Right now, it fluctuates fr 2 - 8, but mainly always at a 6. When it's an eight, I'm crying. When it's a 2, I'm standing, bent over at the waist, legs spread so I pretty much cant do anything. Will continue to update.

herpes?
Went to the er again today after I realized that I had also developed open sores. Was prescribed acyclovira. Still have all same symptoms mentioned above, and continue to take those meds as well. Still feel bad. May be developing fever. Also, stopped using aldara since last post.

Thankyou so much especially jaalzada . It helps to know there are others out there and I'm not alone through this though I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Mine has swollen to the size of half a lemon and it's painful to walk or sit down, I can't even wear underwear so I've been wearing loose boxers. Yesterday I went to the doctors and she told me it was an abscess. I've been taking strong antibiotics since though the swelling seems to be increasing. She said if it doesn't go down soon I'll have to get it drained:(

Help?
Hey um I might have a similar problem. My right labia menora is purple and really swollen. I was masturbating in the shower and then it hurt really bad and I saw that it was huge! It hurts to stand up, walk, and sit. Im only comfortable laying down with legs spread.

My mom has been having me take corn starch bath to help the swelling but I''m sure it is doing anything. I am 15 years old and I stayed home from school because I walk weird and am seriously uncomfortable.

Do you think I need to see a doctor? Mine isnt as big as a lemon or whatever. And I don''t think its a "zit" like thing because its not like a circle on the labia, the whole lip is just huge..

I''m 19 and sexually active. I am currently on the NuvaRing as birthcontol. I had sex with my boyfriend the other night and there wasnt much lube so there was A LOT of friction. i felt my labia minora being rubbed hard but thought nothing of it. Today i thought i had a yeast infection so I bought the cream which you inject like a tampon. About 30 min later my labia minora was swollen, so much so, that i couldnt walk normally. I waited about 8 hours and just removed the NuvaRing. My labia is a dry, swollen, itchy/burning right now. What should i do?

Ok! So if this happned to you... RELAX. There were sites saying i needed surgery and what not.. scarring me so badly!
I had sex with my boyfriend and it was a little dry. I felt slight discomfort and what not but continued. The next day like 36 hours later i thought i had a yeast infection so i used that medicine. it didn't help (obviously b/c i didnt have a yeast infection). I was walking like a duck. I took 2 advil and just laid in bed. the next morning I woke up, slightly swollen, but no where as badly as before. the next day it was all gone.

Hey girls....
DON'T PANIC!!! However, GET TO A GYNO ASAP!!! I'm a phsicians assistant, so I tend to think I'm pretty familiar with anatomy and differnt abnormalitites...well not this crap invloving my "Hooo" as we have been referring to it the past two days. My hubby and I were having some fun in the shower, then moved to the bedroom one day. Due to the heat of the shower, there was much less natural moisture than usual, so in turn more friction than usual. 4 days later I was in the Dr.'s office flipping out because my right Labia Minora near my clitoris was SO swollen and sore just like all the things you have described. It's very common girlies, and it's an abcess or cyst depending on the case. It HURTS LIKE HELL, and it can become VERY VERY dangerous which is why you MUST see the DR. RIGHT AWAY. The doc gave me a broad spectrum antibitotic to take, some lidocaine gel to help ease the pain and sait to take "stiz baths" twice a day in the hottest water I could stand. 24 hours later, I had a new pain in my pelvis (near my right ovary) and a pain shooting down the inside of my right thigh, so I went back today to see the Dr. She took another look and said it had gotten much larger, but now there was an obvious head to the abcess. I told her to drain it in whatever way she felt comfortable with. Now ladies...I will not lie to you...she used a numbing spray to avoid the pain of injecting lidocaine which is awful, but the spray hurt very very badly as well. When she incicised the abcess with the scalpel I wanted to scream my head off...and I did say some very dirty words and yell, just with a washcloth stuffed in my mouth. It was INSANE how much infection came out of that small inciscion...and it was also INSTANT RELIEF after she was done manipulating the tissues to ensure she removed as much pus as possible without me passing out or throwing up.

NOW...I chose this route because I did not want to spend the down time of anesthesia, but any good GYN or ER doc will give you meds to help with the pain. Let me just tell you though, I too walked in like a duck....and with no drugs other than the spray, I walked out normal and went home to play in my flower beds all afternoon. I took my sitz bath this evening, and still expressed quite a bit of infection from the wound wich is exactly what we want to happen. I'm begging you all to please see a GYN professional....any time you have Pus in your body, you have an infection. I also read an article tonight that 86% of vulvar abcess cultures come back positive for MRSA....LADIES....THIS CAN KILL YOU...even if you don't have insurance..there are hospitals who offer grants/financial assistance. Isn't your life worth it? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't ignore it and think it will eventually pop on it's own...sometimes they won't, and sometimes they do...but don't express the full infection which leaves it in your body. Sometimes I HATE having girly parts!!!...the sex was fun...but I told my hubby he will NEVER get it in the shower again!! Good luck ladies. Take care of yourselves!

Swollen Labia
I usually am not sexually active but I was about a month ago and received oral. About two weeks later (last week) I experienced slight pain in my Labia and the inflamation gradually got larger ; larger than a marble smaller than a golf ball by the 3rd day, then the swelling went down. A week later (right now) it occured again. and theres a constant pressure..

I am not on health insurance and don't know what to do .Could this be an STD or not related to sexual activity at all. Does this sound like what you've experienced? The absess?

Perhaps there are things I can do even if I don't have a doc. but im just scared it could be something more serious
