diabetes: Participating in study group, taking Liraglutide ! Posted: 09-22-07 12:06pm
Hi, I am a 34 yr. old stay at home mom. I
have diabetes. I have no health insurance,
so I am taking part in a diabetes study
group taking a medicine call Liraglutide.
I have no family doctor, but have had
bowel problems and heartburn for many
years. Here's where the real problem
started. It was about 6/7 weeks ago. My
bowels changed. I usually have diarrhea,
and have had ever since I can remember. I
usually have very sparse bowel movements,
usually 1or 2 a week. Then all the sudden
I found I constantly had to go. It had
gotten where I would use restrooms
everywhere I went. From one errand to the
next. Over that first week, it became
harder and harder to go. I was actually
constipated w/ diarrhea. Then I noticed my
stools were almost like light brown pieces
of tissue paper, they would just sink to
the bottom of the toilet. There were not
usually many pieces, and sometimes only
one. Of course as it progressed, I had the
urge to go, but couldn't, which led to
laxatives. I used a generic brand and then
X-lax® with no results. Then I tried
Phillips®, with that I actually went a
little. Then I tried suppositories, that
didn't work too well. It led to stomach
cramps and it never melted. So I then
tried Dulcolax® and that actually worked
some. At that point, I had bright red
streams of blood (not much though) and
mucus. I also noticed that my stools were
flat. I actually passed one, after the
Dulcolax® that was half hollow. I passed
a few that looked like short pieces of
spaghetti.
I often felt like in the past that food
sat in my stomach for too long. I could
eat and taste it days later. I know this
medicine I take for diabetes causes that
too. Sometimes (like at the beginning of
this situation) I get some REAL NASTY
burps. I mean just yucky, I'm talking
dead, decaying, just plain gross burps.
Ones that make you and everyone else
around you want to vomit. I also use to
pass a lot of gas but not now. Now after
the bad burping, the having to go all the
time to the I couldn't go at all. I
thought w/ the movement after the
Dulcolax® that I might be alright.I then
started having pain around my navel, and
remembered that just a week ago, there
were a few times, I got piercing pains
there, twice, and they woke me up in the
middle of the night. I told my husband and
laughed, that was odd I thought. I also
get sharp pains in the upper left and
lower left abdomen. I even worried when
the pain started moving to the right, and
above the navel it was an
appendicitis. Then pain in the upper right,
and lower left occur usually the same
times. So I was thinking, Pancreas and Gall
Bladder/ Appendix? But if it was either of
those, I'd probably be really sick by now.
The pain in those areas come and go, the
upper right is much sharper and tender
then the bottom right pain.
I also have pain in the lower left area.
It seems to be getting worse slowly. Now I
can't have a bowel movement at all. I have
passed some light gas, and heard some
gurgling noices there. I have moderate to
sever pain there, it somes and goes. I
feel bloated at times, and it seems to be
tighter than usual. With all these aches
and pains, I have had pain radiate to my
back. But here's the kicker. I started my
period which is randomly painful.I thought
I was going to die!!! 6/7 weeks of
fighting this bowel problem that has
gotten painful, and then my period. My
abdomen swelled so big, I wouldn't have
been surprised if an alien had clawed his
way out. I was literally paralyzed w/pain
and in tears. It wasn't the painful cramps
as much as the swelling and pressure of my
abdomen. I took some pain pills someone
was nice enough to rush me, and after 2
percs. I was able to walk and talk. Now
this morning when I awoke, I am not
bothered too much by my period, but the
abdomen pains upper and lower seem to be
going strong.
I am posting this because I wonder if I
should go to the ER (being I have no
insurance). I'm afraid that If i go while
I'm on my period they'll just chalk it up
to that. It’s not that though, its been
getting worse for weeks. I can actually
point to where it hurts in my lower left
abdomen (its not cramps I swear). Now the
back pain thats running up the mid lower
part of my spine might be. And another
reason I'm afraid to go, is I don't want
to go, and they look at me like I'm crazy.
I honestly feel like there is an
obstruction there on the lower left side.
But I haven't had a bowel movement in
about 4 days. Its been a week since I
used laxatives. I have had 2 bowel
movements since then. 1 that had a few
pieces of stool, and the second had 1
piece (they were very small, flaky, and
thin) diarrhea like. I have been sick to
my stomach, and even dizzy at times. Last
night I was pretty miserable, and today
have had alot of burning sensations from
my mid section to the left, and I did have
sharp pain radiating on the right
lower/mid side. I have had no fever, so I
don't think I really need to be checked do
I? I actually had a small stool today,
the pains have eased a bit....should I use
another laxative.
I hope I left nothing out, if you need to
ask any other questions, I'll try to
answer them. Thanks bunches for your
time. I hope my post wasn't too
confusing.

Go get it checked out! Then if they don't
give you any answers I would definately
seek another opinion from a naturopath.
Your symptoms sound very similar to mine
although I do not have diabetes. 8 years
ago I suffered from a long list of medical
problems and what finally worked for me
was consulting with a great naturopath. I
had to change my eating and I also
incorporated a great cleansing program by
drnatura called colonix. With all the
changes I made my medical problems are
non-exsistant. I am regular and don't
suffer from constipation any longer. I am
happier and healthier. I am sorry you are
suffering however, there are alternative
answers. Good luck. Keep us posted on your
progress.

I went to my endcronologist yesterday. She
sent me to the hospital for some
ultrasounds. Of course no one listened to
me, and they checked my kidneys,
gallbladder and my pancreas. Then they
did a pelvic ultrasound (that was
fun...NOT!) And of course it all looked
fine. I don't know why they won't listen.
I told them it was more than likely in the
digestive tract. So I guess its good that
I can rule that other stuff out anyway.
The pains are not as brutal as they were,
but they still come and go. I guess I'll
just live with it at this point. Atleast
now I'm not constipated, I guess diarreah
is better than not going at all LOL. I am
going to add some extra fiber to my diet
and hopefully it will help firm things up
a bit and see how that works.
Thanks!!
