Q: ERCP and Pancreatitus Questions ?

Hi, I am having an ERCP done Oct92007. I am worried if I get pancreatitus after the procedure I wont know for sure and may not know when to go back to the hospital. I was told that if I do get it it is undeniable. I am wondering how soon after an ERCP do you get it and what the first signs are. I am terrified about having the ERCP. But I have a choledochal cyst. So I have no choice. Also, if I do develop pancreatitus and after it goes away am I now prone to it forever?? I have will ask my surgeon at the time of the procedure but I am scared now and cant wait that long for answers or suggestions on it. Thank you in advance. Angie

chronic pancreatitis
I too, have chronic pancreatitis. I developed it post-op after emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. I have had it for over 10 years. I did have the ERCP done. It seemed to help some, but I still have it. My attacks are much less severe and I don't always have an elevated amylase. Now, when I have a flare-up, I go on bowel rest for a couple of days and it resolves itself. I am afraid that time has done me more good than anything else. Angie: how did your procedure go? I hope that if you did develope post-op pancreatitis that it was temporary. I have been diagnosed since that time with autoimmune pancreatitis. Maxxi: has anyone checked you for this problem? My best advice: listen to your docs and do not let them downplay your problems. Above all, listen to your body; you probably can tell when you are developing a flare-up. For a long time, I could not eat anything with fat in it. I stayed away from these foods for a long time. Eventually, I could eat it again, but not ALL OF THE TIME. I had a CT on my pancreas today; I can tell that I am on the verge of a flare-up. Tomorrow, I will probably rest all day. I have had to stop working because of the problem. I have to stay away from stressful situations because if I don't, I flare up. Good luck and God bless.

ERCP PROBLEMS
My wife had her galbadder out 14 month ago. She stayed in the hospital nine days with pancreatitis after they did a ERCP. She had four ERCP since then with a SOD. she had two CT and is going for another one. She still has pain and can not eat without pain. She has been in a hospital three times because of this. She also looks sick and was never sick before this galbadder surgery. Her pancre numbers and liver numbers are always high. Is this cancer. The doctor said he don't know. Jack

PROBLEMS AFTER GALLBLADDER OUT
SHE IS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS.....LIVER AND PANCREAS NUMBER STILL A LITTLE HIGH. SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL THREE TIMES THIS YEAR FOR PANCREAS ATTACK. LAST ERCP THEY CLEANED OUT THE BILE DUCTS AND PUT TEMPERARY STEND IN THERE. THEY ARE OUT NOW. SHE IS ON A NO FAT DIET ETC. STILL HAS PAIN AFTER SOME DINNERS. I ASKED THE DOCTOR IS THIS CANCER AND HE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW. I FEEL THIS IS ALL BECAUSE THEY OPERATED ON A FILLED GALLBLADDER AND DID NOT WAIT TILL IT EMPTY OUT. BEFORE THIS SHE WAS VERY HEALTHY.

Her dad died of small cell lung cancer. Is this cancer. Anyone know anything about this. The doctors are on a wait and see. Should we go to a big city for this.???

Hey Jack , I hope things are better and you know more by now. I would not wait and see with the nodule on the lung because if it is cancer waiting just gives it time to spread. They can do a biopsy to see what it is. They also can do a scan for cancer its called a PET scan or something like that. With that test they give you a contrast dye by iv and then do a CT scan and the cancerous areas will light up. I would consult with another GI doc if you do not feel like your getting the answers you need or good care. You need to be able to trust your medical team.

Dear Jack...
Jack,

I have the same problem that your wife has. We have had identical things happen. Gallbladder removed, developed SOD (Sphincter of Odd) and then an ERCP. I am still having pain and am under pain control. Please be aware that there are NO KNOWN causes of Cancer related to SOD or Chronic Pancreatitis. So I don't believe your wife has cancer due to her pancreas but try going to St. Louis, MO to MTEC (Midwest Therapeutic Endoscopy Consultants.

God Bless you and Your Wife. COntinue to stick by her side, she really needs that.

Hope all gets better,
Mo'
