Q: Spider Bite & Resultant Infection

About 5 years ago I had a spider bite on my right foot that set off a heck of an infection in that foot. The doc prescribed Cephalexin followed by Cipro, and it seemed to knock out the infection in about a week although my foot never really went back to how it was before, in other words – it’s seemingly been prone to swell easier since.

A week ago, I received another inspect bite (pretty sure it was a spider bite too) that started in my upper thigh (kink or crease between torso and leg) that within a couple of hours had my temperature raising and a very sore area to the touch or to walk with/on that leg. Within days a redness and associated soreness seemed to be headed down to my foot making my foot look about like it did, at it’s worst 5 years ago. This time, I’m taking 3 750mg of Sulfamethoxazone a day. I’m walking better and my upper leg seems fine but my shin, ankle and foot are swollen, red, etc. When I sleep, I have my leg and foot up on the back of a couch (sleeping on the couch for now to better enable this) and the next morning when I go to get up, blood rushes back into that foot and it’s extremely painful to put any pressure on for about 5 minutes. During that initial wake up period though, much of the swelling has gone away in my ankle and foot area.

I’m a little worried about my foot and hoped that I might be able to gain some insight here. TIA Smile

Update
The Cipro has apparently knocked out my infection once again but I do wonder, why another bite within a 5 year span would have led to an infection when many people get bit and never suffer an infection needing meds. On neither occasion was a spider actually observed, just speculation after the fact but something apparently did puncture my skin on both occasions requiring antibiotics to stop the infection. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've heard the past days "you sure have a problem with spider bites don't you" and so on. Would like to make some sense of it all.
