Hello, I am new to these forums, so I
apologize if this has already been asked,
since I can't find an answer in another
thread.
About 20 months ago, I was diagnosed with
mononucleosis. It is my understanding
that once a person has been infected, they
are a carrier for the rest of their life,
but rarely (if ever) show symptoms after
the initial infection. After researching
this condition, it is also my
understanding that people usually only
show symptoms if they are infected as a
teenager, or older- Thus, if he/she was
exposed to the virus that causes mono as a
child, he/she could be a carrier without
ever showing any symptoms.
I have read statistics that some 90%'ish
of the population will not get symptoms
when exposed to mono because they have
already been previously exposed (are
carriers) and will have built up an
immunity.
I have recently met this girl, and we have
our first date this weekend. I am scared
to death that she might want to kiss
because I really like her and I don't want
her to get sick because of me. I stopped
showing symptoms around 18 months ago, but
I have read that the virus can be passed
on for the rest of one's life as long as
one is a carrier.
So, the question: Is there any sort of
medical test that can be done to determine
if she is already a carrier (and therefore
will not develop symptoms if we kiss
because she has already built up an
immunity to it)?
If there is indeed a test, and she turns
up negative as a carrier, is there any way
to prevent her being infected by this
virus from me?
