Can Mono Cause Weight Gain?
Posted: 09-19-07 11:52am

My girlfriend was diagnosed with Mono today.
She had a bad rash and has gained about 17 pounds in ONE month with no change of diet to get her that way.

The doc checked her thyroid and it was ok.

Although the mono was diagnosed, I am curious as to if this could be the cause of the weight gain or does she need to be tested for other possible problems?

Thanks

She just called me.
She also is having a problem with insulin resistance and the doctor said she will eventually have to take insulin shots (be fully diabetic).
The doc said the weight gain was do to this.

I am so scared because I have diabetes and I know what it can do.
The problem is she is not really worried and thinks I am just nagging her and even her PARENTS are'nt taking her to see an endocrinologist which is where I said she should go.

They don't have alot of money but she does have insurance through her father. I think they are just scared of paying or don't take it seriously.
I don't know. But I don't know what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm definatly going to stand beside her through all of this, NO MATTER WHAT.

I love her very much. I just wish I knew how to talk to her and her parents and get them to listen without them thinking I am imposing or think they are stupid or something.

I am afraid either the doctor (which she does'nt even like)
is either not explaining how serious this is... or is not that good of a doctor.
I told her she should switch doctors but they did not.
The doctor took a month to even SEE her for her symptoms and she had to go to the emergency room for almost 5 days straight with that rash.
He claims he is too busy all the time but in this town and him being a family doctor.. there is NO WAY. I think he just does'nt care about patients.
I want her to see and endocrinologist, a family doctor is not good enough for diabetes. I know this from experience.

Weight gain is not a symptom of Mononucleosis, or EBV.

It's likely her decreased activity, depression or other effects of mono are the true cause to fluid retention (which would account for 17+ pounds a month!) and fat storage.

Via my research I find that people eat/smoke/drink and whatever else will generally take their mind off treating the sickness. They are going for those endorphines. Towards pleasure and away from pain...

And then wind up shooting themselves in the foot. The energy the body could/should be using to fight off the infection is squandered with habits that actually hurt instead of help recovery.
