Hey guys so I have some questions about breast feeding. I was wondering what foods to avoid while breast feeding that can cause babies to get gas and upset their stomachs and I have been wanting a margarita for so long and now that im not prego. was wondering if its ok to have one or some wine while breast feeding?? I just dont want to do anything that will be bad for the baby. Hope to get some feedback soon.

Tomato based sauces really upset Jaylon's tummy when I was nursing (spaghetti, lasagna, pizza, etc).
It's kind of trial and error. Some things will bother one baby, but not another. Some babies are bothered by everything and some are bothered by nothing.
I don't think one glass of wine would hurt anything. I think once you establish a good supply you could pump enough to feed while you were having your margarita (s), nobody can have just one margarita Laughing You could always pump and dump after you have been drinking if you were worried. Then your baby won't be exposed to any liquor.

Hi Lauren;

I agree with the above advice. It is trial and error most of the time, and it can get frustrating. I have it on good authority that the types of foods that make grown ups gassy are the same types that make wee ones gassy (beans, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, etc)

My midwife advised me that it would be OK to have the occasional marg or glass of wine, but to be careful when you begin to embark on that path again. You will have no tolerance whatsoever, and you certainly don't want to get sloshed with a young baby to care for! LOL. She also told me that pumping and dumping is somewhat ineffective because the alcohol doesn't really exit your system fast enough (I did it anyway, for peace of mind).

Everything you eat will cause your breastmilk to taste different. Onions, garlic, etc. You will soon know what your baby likes and/or dislikes about your diet. Smile

i'm lucky, so far no foods have upset Mika's stomach. I think i was told the odd drink is ok but try not to drink it at a time when you know you'll be feeding soon and not when you are actually feeding

I always heard spicy foods bothered them like mexican stuff with hot sauce or jalepenos or something stuff like that. Also try not to load up on alot of caffeine. it will be hard with sleepless nights but that can make her hyped up and awake longer. So i wouldnt suggest drinking coffee or sodas specially at night when u might want to get sleep yourself.
I think the main foods when they are upset/gassy etc are like dairy products etc. take one out for a week see how they do it still cranky then take something else out of your diet. Pretty much what every oneelse said trial and error.
And one drink wont harm the baby. I pumped a few bottles before i drank any alcohol so i had about 3-4 feedings bottled already. then did the pump and dump the next morning.

Oh my, I drank a mountain dew the other day and Luke fussed all night. It was horrible so I am never doing that again. Luke doesn't like dairy either.
