Q: Is It a Mole, Birthmark, Skin Cancer !?

A little background information...

My boyfriend is 20 years old, half-Caucasian and half-Korean, and has Crohn's Disease (an autoimmune disease affecting the large intestine). Before diagnosis in 2005 he was 6'0" and roughly 170 pounds. Now, 2 years later, he is 6'0" and somewhere between 135-140 pounds, so just slightly underweight.

Since he was quite young he had what we thought was a birthmark on the top of his left wrist that he jokingly called his "coffee stain". It is somewhere between the side of a nickel and the size of a dime, smooth, even colored, symmetrical, hair grows out of it (normal hair like on the rest of his arm) and it is tan in color (kind of the color of milky coffee). Before he lost weight, it was perfectly even with the rest of his arm/skin. Now that he has lost weight, he's noticed that it is raised (especially when he bends his wrist) but it is still smooth texture wise and has not changed diameter or color.

He has other moles that need to be checked out (much smaller ones on his back/chest) that seem to have grown or changed color.

He has a Doctor's appointment this Monday (8/24) with a dermatologist, but we have been reading on the internet about possibilities and are officially, for lack of a better term, freaked out.

Any ideas?

Hi!
I don't think you and your boyfriend should worry too much.
I guess he is having a pigmented birthmark and in most of the cases they are harmless(they aren't cancerous, but composed of abnormal clusters of pigmented cells) This birthmark is popularly known as the cafe-au-lait patch for its ten-brown color. They may vary in size from a few millimeters, to large macules measuring more than 10 cm in size. Large, solitary spots are larger than 0.5 cm and they aren't associated with syndroms or other disease.
Moles are the most common of this form of birthmarks. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and rarely pose any health risk.
I hope everything will be fine at the appointment.
Please, write back about doctors opinion!

Thank you for your reply MandMs, it is much appreciated. After some reading we think it might just be a birthmark (he has had it all his life). We are not sure though, because it is raised and squishy in texture... almost feels like it's full of air or something. He never noticed that before, but we are not sure if it's because it has just recently become like that or if it's because he had a thicker layer of fat around his arms (and the rest of his body) before so it never seemed to be raised. I hope that made sense, it's late and I should be in bed! Shocked

We're definitely stressing about what the doctor will say on Monday. It does not help that I am a notorious hypochondriac... ugh.

Hi ladycatscry!
I understand your concern and I hope this situation will end positively.
I still think that you shouldn't worry to much, but I also admire you for your awareness of the possible health risks of skin birthmarks.
It's normal for some moles(birthmarks) to change slowly as a years pass. They can become raised and hairs can develop on them.
Does your boyfriend find it itchy or tender(painful)?
Does only a portion of the birthmark appears raised?

I have a birthmark on my lower leg. It was as small as a dot when I first had it then grew to be about the same size as your BF's. Between a nickel and a dime. First I was really scared too that it can be melanoma but my mom told me when I was born the doctors checked my mole and told my mom that there was nothing wrong with it. Nice to know that there is someone out there that was scared like me. I doubt that birthmark is cancerous because if it is a birthmark doctors would have probably checked it when he was first born. Don't worry too much. Smile
