It was an old belief that you could only get mono once. For most people, that seems to be the case, but there have been proven cases of people having mono multiple times.
I had a moderate/severe case of mono in 2003, and had less severe cases in 2005 and 2006. The second and third round with mono occurred immediately following extended periods of high stress. All three times, I tested positive for mono. I asked several doctors (my family doctor, an Urgent Med doc, and an ER doc) about the mono-once theory, and all three told me that you can have mono multiple times. Once you contract the virus, you carry it around in your body for the rest of your life...for most people, it serves as immunity from further infection, but in others, it can cause mono to flair up during periods when your immune system is suppressed (times of high stress can do that to you!). It's similar to chicken pox - most people have it once, and are immune to it for the rest of their lives, while others can experience the illness more than once.
Regardless of what the doctor is telling you, if you believe you have mono, treat your body accordingly - get as much rest as possible, drink lots of fluid, refrain from strenous activities/sports/exercise for the duration of your symptoms. Better safe than sorry, right?
Hope you're feeling better!
