I am a mother of 3, and have Shocked not been kissing any strangers lately. I have been sick for a week now. Initial symptoms were headache, fever, chills, tiredness, sore throat, swollen glands. Dr. suspected mono or strep. The strep test came back negative. Blood test showed "old" strain of mono, but nurse who gave me the results said that was not what is wrong now. Could she be mistaken and this is actually an outbreak or is something else causing my illness? TIA.

The exact same thing happened to me. About three months ago, I had a mono test. The nurse told me that the first one that only took a few hours was positive and the one that came back a week later showed that I had had mono before. However, after six weeks with no improvement, I went to the doctor, who showed me the results and which clearly showed a severe case of acute mono. It is quite possible that the nurse was wrong. You really need to know because if you have it and don't rest, it will get worse. I would know, I've had severe symptoms for three months Sad. I hope you don't have it, especially as a mother of three! If your symptoms don't impove, ask you doctor to review and explain your results.

This is very similar to my situation. My test came back and said I had previously had mono but not presently. However, I do not remember ever having mono, which seems like something I, or my mother, would remember.
Could the doctors be confusing an old strain with a present one by ANY chance?

Keep us posted on what happens.

mono
It can keep coming back for a long time. Stress and lack of rest makes it worse. Allergies are also stressors.

It was an old belief that you could only get mono once. For most people, that seems to be the case, but there have been proven cases of people having mono multiple times.

I had a moderate/severe case of mono in 2003, and had less severe cases in 2005 and 2006. The second and third round with mono occurred immediately following extended periods of high stress. All three times, I tested positive for mono. I asked several doctors (my family doctor, an Urgent Med doc, and an ER doc) about the mono-once theory, and all three told me that you can have mono multiple times. Once you contract the virus, you carry it around in your body for the rest of your life...for most people, it serves as immunity from further infection, but in others, it can cause mono to flair up during periods when your immune system is suppressed (times of high stress can do that to you!). It's similar to chicken pox - most people have it once, and are immune to it for the rest of their lives, while others can experience the illness more than once.

Regardless of what the doctor is telling you, if you believe you have mono, treat your body accordingly - get as much rest as possible, drink lots of fluid, refrain from strenous activities/sports/exercise for the duration of your symptoms. Better safe than sorry, right? Smile

Hope you're feeling better! Smile

All of these problems relate to my situation also. A couple of days ago I was feeling dizzy, I had headaches, and a lot of symptoms towards Diabetes since it runs in the family. I went to the doctor and got blood taken, she said everything was fine except that I had mono for the past couple of months. I just found out today after going back to the doctor for a flu, that I've been fighting mono since about february when I was first infected. I had no idea I even had it to begin with. Yesterday and today I've been feeling dizzy, i've gotten headaches, my throat's been hurting and i have swollen glands. All of this points to mono, but the doctor said i recently had it and i'm now recovering from it so it's already gone. Why do I have all of the symptoms if it's already gone?
