Q: Male Diastasis Recti
asked by: Diastasis on September 18th, 2007

Hello,

I am 35 and have been diagnosed as having diastasis recti. I have found a bunch of info on the net about women and infants having this disorder but only 2 or 3 items mentioning men.

I've read that it is nothing to worry about and is only cosmetic. 2 Questions.

One, with there being no muscle in the area above my naval wouldn't it be necessary to protect this area when say, roughhousing with some kids or playing football?

Two, is there any information as to what causes this in males? Nutritional issues, symptom of disease, genetic thing, etc.?

Thanks for any help anyone has. I really appreciate it!

Hello!
it happens that i've been investigating about abdominal exercises and the diastasis theme came up.

-definition: separation of the abdominal muscles due to tearing of the connective tissue that hold those muscles together

- causes: pregnancy, c-section surgery, massive weight loss, heavy weightlifting, excessive abdominal exercises, aging, genetic predisposure, muscle weakness

- cures: avoid regular crunches and sit-ups since this could make it worse. try this exercise: do crunches but holding your stomach with your arms crossed around the abdominal muscles trying to bring the muscles together. this exercise its gonna strengthen the abdominus recti muscles and reduce the separation between them. exercise number 2 there are two muscles at each side of the abdomen: the transversus abdominus, if properly exercised can do the work that the connection tissue couldn't do (holding your abdominus recti toghether). how to exercise the transversus: just hold in your belly for a few minutes a day (without holding your breath) like you wanted your abdomen muscles to touch your spine some call this exercise vacuum. if nothing of this works abdominoplasty operation(they suture your muscles toghether) its the only remaining option

-warnings: if you don't exercise very often remember not to push yourself more than you can do, stretch before performing any exercise, when doing breathing exercises try not to expand the abs, maybe, but only maybe, if you use a bandage and/or a weightlifting belt around your waist while doing the exercises you could maximize the results.

Hope this helps
