More high fevers...
My 19month old son has been having sudden HIGH fevers off and on for 6 months. Every other week I have to take 2 days off work and keep him home. His fevers go straight up to 105 and sit there for at least 2 days. the only way to get them down under 101 is to give both tylenol and ibuprofen. He has no other symptoms and every time I take him in, they say its viral. I've started charting everything - what he eats, how he sleeps - EVERYTHING and the dr says he'll grow out of it...but I worry since he only has ONE kidney (since birth) and I cant chance these fevers or the medicine affecting his only good kidney - any updates on this string?

Thanks!

unexplained fevers
My grandson, who is 20 months old, has recurrent high fever that comes on suddenly without warning and is sometimes accompanied by an ear infection or respiratory infection. He was hospitalized twice when he was an infant with pneumonia, which of course started with the high fever, etc. We have made numerous trips to the ER, only to be told "viral infection", which means they don't know what it is or what to do about it. He just had an episode about a month ago and now he is fighting it again. He is very lethargic, pale, and has such high temperature until he shakes uncontrollably. He also starts throwing up, due to the high fever and then you have to worry about dehydration. We took him to the doctor yesterday and was told no infection in ears, just passed it off to nothing, really. No medication was given or any advice on what to do about it. It is very frustrating to see a little one feel so bad and not be able to help. The bad thing about it, too, is that you know it will happen again soon after him getting better. Any suggestions?

Random High Fevers
So glad to find other parents going through this. My daughter has had at least 12 fevers over 103 in the last 9 months. She's had 3 this month and the answer is always "viral". I know there is something more to this.

Finally..I am NOT alone in this!
My son is 2 years old..He started getting these fevers at just shy of 2 months old..Our first trip to the ER was my first Mother's Day in 2007..At around 2-3 AM we heard him cry..he was STTN at that point so we jumped out of bed and went to his crib where he was burning up..We took him straight to the ER and they did blood, urine, x-rays, spinal tap, and nasal cultures and nothing showed up...they still put him on an IV antibiotics there and we went to his pedi for the following 2 days to get the rest of the med..And since then he has gotten a high fever every 3-4 weeks..they have only caught something 4 times..2 being ear infections another being a massive throat infection, and another for pneumonia...Sometimes these fevers are 105.5 and there is NOTHING in his labs...it is taking its toll on all of our bodies(and wallets)...I am going to be talking to his pedi as soon as the Easter Holidays are over and the office opens on Monday...I finally feel like I am not alone in this anymore..I told a few "friends" of mine about his fevers and they freaked on me because the docs never found anything...

high fevers
my son had high fevers every 2 weeks lasting 2-3 days. We could literally clock it out. We were also told it was viral. After 6months of this we finally had a different pediatric doctor who recomended going to a pediatric infectious disease doctor. He was diagnosed with Fever of Unknown Etiology. The Infectious Disease Doctor also questioned if there was a tonsil abscess that was too deep to see on examination. Initially we tried a heavy dose antibiotic for 30 days to see if this would end the fevers. It only worked by disrupting the cycle but my son was still getting the fevers. The next step was to get his tonsils out. Take note that my son has never complained or showed signs of a sore throat. There has been some research that has shown a tonsillectomy has been effective in curing the Fevers of Unknown Etiology. So, we went for it. When he was 2 1/2 years old he had a tonsillectomy. He is now 5 yrs old and has not had a high fever since the surgery!! My biggest recommendation is to take your child to a pediatric infectious disease doctor. They truly have seen and heard it all.

Frequent fevers
My 18 month old son just started with these crazy fevers two months back. We're on our second one this month. It's exhausting he cries all the time and won't eat let alone drink ANYTHING! Starts crying every time we come near him with food or liquids. What makes this worse is that the medecine doesn't help anymore. The tylenol work alone, then it didn't so we added motrin, then that doesn't work anymore. Now we can't give him any oral medecine because he throws up afterwards. I've been giving him suppositories but it isn't helping anymore. Now what is there to do? Doctors tell me it's viral.

High fevers every 2 weeks
I am glad to see I am not alone.

My son just turned 3 is always running a high fever every 2 weeks. This has been going on for 6 months. He's in daycare so I thought that in the beginning it was just the cold weather, but's continued on. The daycare director said that no one is sick as much as he is. He's always came down with fevers more than the other kids around him. He was out of daycare for a year and he still was sick every 4-6 weeks.

We don't take him to the doctor every time. Sometimes when we do take him to the doctor he has an infection. Every time he gets a fever his lymph node in his neck swells up and gets huge and they never go all the way down.

The pediatrician is quick to blame daycare. He has allergies too so we've been working with the Allergist/Immunoligist. She's been trying to figure out what's wrong. He's had blood work and everything looks fine. He's been tested for his immune system, Mono and infectious blood. The allergist is talking about doing a sinus scan to see if there's a deep sinus infection in the sinuses. The doctor's all seem to quickly jump that it's a virus, I know it's got to be more than that.

We finally got a referral to an infectious disease doctor at the children's hospital in the city. We go this week so I hope we get somewhere. I just want to know what it is so we can work with it.

Thanks for all of the useful information and support!

My son is 8 years old and has been experiencing a fever of 100.4 to 103.5 for the past 4 months every 2-3 weeks. Last episode he experienced a bloody nose that was stopped by the paramedic.(I have never seen a bloody nose like that before). I was also told that it is viral. All blood tests and x-rays came back ok. Is anyone else worried beyond belief???????

High Fevers
My daughter is 2 1/2. She has been getting these high fevers ever since she was born. It would be every other month. The doctor would just send me home and tell me it is a virus. She has no other symptoms. They last for 4-7 days. Her highest fever was 105.5. It is very scary. I just had blood work done yesterday to see if there was anything wrong.

Our daughter is also 2 1/2. She has a very high fever with no other symptoms every 4 weeks which last for 3 days. We're now under the care of a Rheumatologist. We had her DNA tested for genes related to known Periodic Fever Syndromes, but the tests all came back negative. Regardless, we've just started her on a prescription of Colchicine which we hope will lower her fevers, shorten their duration and ultimately eliminate them all together. We're doing this to prevent organ damage from these recurrent high fevers.

i have a 21 month old boy and we are experiencing the same thing. for the past 4 months, we have to deal with fever that spikes up to 105 on a 2-4 week interval. 2 nights ago he had a febrile seizure which was a very scary episode for any parent. the thing that really puzzles me is, that same morning we brought him to his pediatrician and the doctor said that there was nothing wrong with him. but that night we had to call 911 and rush him to the ER. in the ER, they said that he has an ear infection. just weird that it was not seen by the doctor during his morning visit. we are going to have a follow-up check up with my son's pediatrician and this time i am going to insist on a blood work and other necessary tests to know what is causing the fever. aside from blood work, are there any other tests that my son should undergo to determine the root cause infection?

Hey I am so glad to know I am not alone on this fever thing I am a grandma and it seems everytime my granddaughter's mom sends her for her weekend visit with me and my son ,well not every time but a lot , she will feel warm when I get her and the weak eyes are a dead give away. Lo and behold about an hour later here we go with the fevers of 103.5up and down with alt. tylenol and motrin. Last time they said she had Roseola but that came with a rash..So I'll be glad when she "outgrows" this..

6 Years and Counting!
WOW! In some ways I am relieved to have finally come across this page and in other ways I am angry that I don't get the help I think I should from the doctors. I never heard of Periodic Fever Syndrome! But you can sure bet I will find out more about it and have my daughter tested.
For a little background, she is now 6 years old and as a baby and young toddler had gotten very high fevers (up to 105 degrees) literally EVERY third week that lasted a whole week. I too have to keep switching medicines back and forth to bring down her fevers. As she got older, they became less frequent but she still got them at least once a month and just as high in temperature. Also, if she went to a party with children whom she did not spend time with, like clockwork she would get sick a week to the day after the party. I literally had to have her skip parties if I knew it was going to interfere with an event. I kept getting the same "It's viral" brushoff that many of you get and was told "She'll outgrow it by the time she is....." (pick a year). She has not outgrown it. They blamed it on her thumb-sucking. She no longer sucks her thumb and it has not slowed down a bit.
My brother has Crohn's disease which is an autoimmune disease. She has been tested for it and while she has some symptoms, she does not yet show definitive results for it. Usually, it is not detected until the age of 7. She has had blood tests galore, EKGs, Sonograms, you name it and nothing. I just know in my heart of hearts that there is something going on and I feel like no Dr. will listen to me. They all dismiss it. I am frustrated and worried as are you all. I will definitely look more closely at this Periodic Fever Syndrome and let you all know if I find anything out. Thank you all for posting. It is good to have support finally!
