its when an animal that goes underwater for long periods of time have a way of shutting down their systems to a certain degree so they use less oxygen and can stay under longer, i believe.

I don't see how that relates to mental health. That's what I thought too, you know? But humans, like some other animals, actually have to be taught how to hold their breath unless they are a very young baby, and then they do it on reflex.

Why are you asking? I'm a little confused.

A while ago I read that sailors were saved by this reflex. They should have drowned but washed up onshore unharmed. The reflex kept water out of their lungs and their body temp down so low that even though they were under water for so long it didn't have long term ill effects. (I think it's the same reflex...I don't remember where I read it, though.) Here's a grain of salt: .

As a migraine sufferer I read that this can help alleviate the headache.

Mental health, though...I have never heard of a connection.

I don't want to post specifics because it doesn't necessarily seem safe or healthy, but I found something about using the diving reflex to help deal with flashbacks.

Didn't seem very scientific, so I don't trust it.

It was the only connection I could come up with.
