Hi...have severe TMJ. For years I could not open my mouth without putting my head between my legs and manipulating my jaw. I had a mouth guard but it did very little. I also have anxiety disorder so every new symptom is alarming.

Life for the last three years has been stressful. First my father died, then my mother, then my grandmother, then in June, my brother. I noticed a strange sensation in the crease of my nose...almost sore. Then the headaches started...eye pain, jaw pain and head pain behind my ears. My jaws click and grind and I have chewed a mess in one check. I clench my teeth so hard I am wearing away the enamel.

I would like to know if anyone else has experienced the weird feeling in the nose. 90% of the time I feel it when I am smiling, pursing my lips or eating. I almost feel like it is coming from where I am chewing the inside of my cheek but I can't tell. Does the muscle or nerves from the jaw travel there?

I have an appointment with a TMJ dentist the first week of October...it took me weeks to get the appointment. It's almost funny...I can tolerate the other pain but the nose-thing is driving me crazy.

Hi Vestibular,
I'm so sorry to hear about your losses and to have TMJ, my heart goes out to you. Yes, I have weird sensations in my nose. Matter of fact, right now I do. It's not a pain or anything, tho. Just a sensation at my nose crease. I do believe the muscles are all tied together in the head. Earlier in my TMJ nightmare, I couldn't believe all the various aches and pains all over the head, neck and shoulders. Doctors were no help. The biggest reason I know that it's TMJ (well, 99.99% sure) is that most of the pains go away when my TMJ has been "calm" for several months. Like now, but I do still get strange sensations all over; like someone or something is touching me and even pushing.

You do need a bite splint, if for nothing else, to save your teeth enamel. I hope and pray that your appointment in October comes soon and is all you need it to be. If your TMJ doc (or family physician) doesn't mention it, you might be helped with physical therapy by a good therapist trained in TMJ.

God bless...
Carol

I've made an appointment with a dentist who treats TMJ. It's hard in this small town to find any kind of specialists. I first made an appointment with a ENT but was convinced by another TMJ sufferer to try the dentist first.

what kind of specialist i meant. other than tmj--like oms or neuromuscular.

very often the ent would just say to go see a tmj specialist. getting the right specialist is imparitive. if this isnt the right one i can help you find a better one. let me know if you need me at all.

Thanks for your help. All i know is that his advertisement states that he diagnoses and treats tmj. When I called to make the appointment I specifically asked if he would be able to treat this disorder and was told 'yes'.

I just wish I could calm myself down until the appointment because despite the fact that I have already been diagnosed with TMJ, it's so hard not to imagine all kinds of other 'things' that it could be.

thanks again.

Thank you, Carol, for your reply. It helps to know there are others who, unfortunately, share the same symptoms. Misery Loves Company????!

Thanks again,

Donna

Well...I had a very comforting reply from carol and a few others and a normal person would calm down, look at all the symtpoms and realize TMJ is nasty and consuming. But no. I look on all the TMJ websites and read things like: Make sure you don't have a brain or sinus tumor or an anyerism. My father died of sinus cancer so I am convinced this is a possibility even though he had NONE of my symptoms. I am such a wreck waiting for the dental appointment that I almost went to the emergency room today.

Please someone reassure me. I want to say besides TMJ I have Meniere's Disease and Fibromyalgia. I am also 60 years old and when we moved back from VA to NY four years ago, our insurance company dropped us so I am now uninsured. Running off to various specialists is out of the question which is why I chose the TMJ dentist to start with. (my last trip to the ER was almost $2000)

Okay. I went to the dentist in May and had a root canal. I was all but upside down during the whole procedure and my mouth hurt when he was done...not on the side that hurts now. The root canal was done through a capped tooth so I had to go to another dentist to fill in the cap. He was rough and I had a headache when he was finished. I then noticed the soreness in my right nostril(again...the opposite side of the root canal) It hurts mainly when I smile, eat or exhibit any facial expression. It is a sickening ache and it almost makes me sick to eat. It went away for a month! Then I got the sore throat, ear ache and horrible head and eye pain. My eyes seem overtired or strained. I get sharp 'pricks' above my eyebrown and occasional soreness down the side of my nose. The back of my head hurts and behind my ear. The pain in my nostril came back and now it is with me most of the time...sometimes a day or two goes by without it. ..today the cartilage 'stings'.

My shoulder are tight and if I squeeze the soft flesh on the top, Pain shoots almost to all the spots in my head and face that ache. I also have a knot in the jaw muscle (has been there for years) and if I press that I get the same pain.

The discs in my jaws are gone. The noise I make from eating, yawing and talking is so loud I have a friend that won't sit next to me when I eat. "The crunching" makes her sick. Today, while putting on lipstick, the pressure of the tube on my lips made my jaws crunch. I clench my teeth constantly and I have chewed a raw mess in my cheek...I do this in the daytime and my husband is forever telling me I am doing it and to stop.

I do not seem to have the excruiating jaw pain that everyone else has. Only occasionally does that happen...they just feel tight. My pain is everywhere else...but the Nose Thing is the most sickening because I find myself not wanting to speak...if I don't move any muscles in my face it stays pretty calm. I wonder if this is from the constant chewing of my cheek???

I have had TMJ for years and now I am wondering if all the 'vascular headaches' I was treated for was related to this. Doctors don't seem to want to diagnosis it as such.

Three years ago I had an agonzing pain in my right hard palate. Went to ER, periodontist that wanted 700 bucks to scale my teeth, and an ENT. had sinuses x-rayed...nobody found anything but when I opened my mouth for the ENT he jumped back like I had shot him. The crunching alarmed him but he would not say the pain in my palate was from that. So I HATE to go that route again.

I know this is long winded and I apologize but I am really afraid...are my symptoms consistant with TMJ??? I also want to add I am a writer and spend hours bent over a computer ...I have scoliosis(spelling?) and two compressed vertebrae. I want to get it all in!!!

The pain is with me most of the time but it travels around....90% on the right side. As I write this, I clenched so hard on my front teeth my jaw is locked! Am I hopeless, or what???

Thanks for any support...

donna, the best thing that you can do is relax. stress only adds to the problem. you do sound like you have tmd. the second best thing that you can do is not beleive or rather let any thing on the internet upset you. 99.9% of the time there isnt even the remote possibilities of anyerisms and tumors and what not. its a jaw problem. yeah some people who had tmd had those things. more than likely it was specific to that person.

ive got good success at finding doctors for tmd that are good and know what they are doing. In fact there is one that id like you to go see. let me know if you are interested.

please relax. there is nothing wrong with you. your jaw just needs a little help . you have tmd, tmd does not have you.

You are not hopeless. no one with tmd is hopeless. there is always hope. as long as we are still alive there is hope. Im fighting for an answer----i still have hope that we can find a way to bust this. any one that tells you you are hopeless deserves a good swift kick in the pants.

hang in there. i know its hard to beleive but it does get better.

email me or pm me if you need any thing.
