Q: On Going Undiagnosed Chronic Chest Pain

Well, my problem started with my first pregnancy in 95. I had an EGD done for problems with swallowing, then after my second pregnancy put me at bed rest, I remember not being able to sit up becasue labor would start, and not being able to lay down becasue i would have intense chest pain. 5 EGD's later, an agiogram that turned out fine, about 5 CT scans, and as many X rays, a PH study and tests for chest wall pain and asthma I still have no diagnoses. I did have emergency surgery to remove my appendix, and that was when they caught my gall bladder just hanging out not working, I had it tested just 4 months before, so I had it removed 3 weeks later.

As of today Sept 12th 2007, I have been dealing with chronic chest pain for this entire time. In addition, I have started with a professional pain management doc. They have helped tremendoulsy. But I feel as though I am just hiding a problem, not addressing it.

In all the tests I have been diagnosed with a sliding hyatial hernia, but not too bad, and supposedly they don't hurt. They have found rings, and strictures, but not really severe, (went ahead and dialated), I have allergic asthma, and definatly reflux. Nothing that screams this horrible every day, day in day out, won't let me sleep chronic chest pain, through to my back.

As of yesterday, I had a "flair up" that felt like I was being run over by a car. It lasted about 30 minutes, I cried, crawled, slammed my chest against the wall, jumped up and down, stood up really straight and tilted my head way back as if trying to stretch out the problem, but still no good. I finally went to the ER, and since the "kind", triage nurse said, oh, its not your heart its just a gastric problem, but I am not the doctor, made my husband wait outside the room, and than had me walk to another area, I figured I wasn't going to die right away. Then after I sat in that room for an hour and a half longer with out being seen by anyone, except a passing nurse that we asked about leaving with, we just left. Since coming home, it seems everything has been very swollen in and around my sternum and now especially under my left rib cage.

I am so distrought, as well as scared. I have 3 kids under 11 and 2 other kids 21 and 19, I don't have time to be out of commission. We have spent over 50K trying to figure out and fix this problem. At least I am blessed to have a husband that works and allows me to be a stay at home mom, with insurance to help out with the bills. Even then the 50K is what we have spent out of pocket. I am wondering if it is pancreas related, or liver, or maybe some kind of condition you get after you have chest surgery and some lining gets infected or something???

Please give me any ideas you may have and God Bless all the other people I have found online and off, with any kind of chronic pain. I will keep you in my prayers. KK

Hello, I Am In the Same Boat!
Hi,
I was just curious, if you have had any luck? I have been going through this for almost 10 months. Every test imaginable, and still no answers. The pain is so draining, and I just don't know what else to do. I too, have kids. 2 boys almost 5 and 11. I'd really like to exchange stories, maybe we will discover something the docs can't.
Thanks,
Jen Embarassed

I Am Also Experiencing This
I am 26 and about 3 months pregnant, expecting my first. I have noticed chest pain for the past 2, maybe 3 months and disregarded it as heartburn. Last weekend the pain was so severe, most movements of my chest made me bawl (ie: taking off my pants, putting on my bra, twisting my upper torso, etc..) I later realized my sternum was swollen.... well it progressively got better and the past few nights my chest pain has seemed to come back and today I realized my sternum is swollen again... I don't know what this is and don't know what I should do... any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Chest Pain - problem - treat the problem not the symptom
I read your information about your chest pain. Sounds as if you have been through a really difficult time. And you have spend a very large amount of money.
What I see you discussing in your request is appendicitis gall bladder disease, allergic asthma, reflux and chronic chest pain.
What these disease state are - Appendicitis - inflammation of the appendix - Reflux - inflammation of the lining of the stomach, Allergic Asthma - inflammation of the lung tissue - you are chronically inflammation. You have multiple chronic illnesses. This may be contributing to your chronic chest pain.
I have a few questions for you.
Do you have any family history of heart disease?
I would be happy to chat more about this if you have not found a solution.

Happy to help
