am 20 years old and am in very good health. I'm 5'7 and can dunk a basketball and am very athletic. I am in good health for the most part except a couple minor sports injuries BUT.........

For the last couple of years i have had a bad sternum. I noticed the pain about 3 years ago and it affects my sleep at night. Whenever I sleep on my chest, when i wake up my sternum is extremely tender. It hurts when i push in and it also hurts whenever i take hits to the sternum while playing basketball. Even when i laugh extremely hard it hurts. When i stretch in the morning there is a real faint cracking noise in my chest.

One time when i was wrestling with someone they hit me in the chest and it hurt so bad i went to the hospital. I cant take a hard shot to the chest at all. I got an x-ray taken and the doc said everything looked good except for an unfused rib, but that should be causing me no pain. Also i think i do have Tmj. My jaw cracks when i open my mouth real wide. Does anybody know what i have? I've had it for at least 3 years so i dont think its anything too threatening. I ahve no medical insurance and i support myself, go to school, and work full time. I cant offered to go to the doctors again. THanks for your help.

And do you play basketball for the school team? Or is it just for fun?

I have played for multiple teams at the same time. Right now i am in college and worked out all summer to get back in shape; however, because of this and multiple minor injuries (ankles, right knee, and right elbow) i decided to take this year off to get physically 100%. I am planning on playing next september though. I have had this chest injury for about 3 years, but its bad in the mornings or when i press down on it, laugh extremely hard, or even cough hard. I wish i had the money to go to the doctors and stuff, but i pay my own rent, tuition, and am saving money to transfer. I am already struggling i can never afford this.

Are there any sliding-scale clinics in your area? Do you live in a city?

Hmmmm
I sometimes get sternum pain from getting punched there. For me the "walrus stretch/cat stretch (same as the dand exercise from Hindu wrestling, similar to a dive bomber pushup, except turned into a stretch)" fixes things up. But since you said stretching just causes a crackling noise, I'm not sure you should try that. You said you worked out a lot, maybe you are working out so hard that your body is destroying itself. My physical education teacher from 9th grade had a Pac 4 record in rugby, could sprint faster than any kid in our class (which is amazing since my school has a really rigorous sports program that has taken us to several state championships), and bench press over 250 lbs (he could do 300lbs on a machine, so I'm guessing 250 without machine). Recently, injuries have popped up in both his rotator cuff and his ankle, which both required surgery and both he might never fully recover from. Maybe you should ease back of working out, especially stuff that is taxing on your bones like weight lifting or sports involving contact. One last thing, putting heat packs on your sternum may help since heat promotes more blood to flow to your sternum, icing your sternum might help unswell any sort of bone swelling there. That's all I got to say, try not to worry. In 8th grade I bruised my middle finger knuckle from punching a metal pole, afterwards any sort of pressure applied to my knuckle would produce a cold shooting sensation. After 2 years of punching a bucket of sand and using heat packs, my knuckle made a full recovery.

Extremely eHealthy
A lot of times the sternum pain you have described could be due to having a subluxed rib, especially if breathing hurts. An Osteopath could help with this.
